Welcome Back!
I am so glad to have your child in my classroom. If you ever have a question or concern, please do not hesitate to let me know .Good home/school communication is a priority for me. The best way to reach me is via email. My information is at the bottom of this page.
Important Notes
Here are a few important reminders:
- If your child will go home a different way than usual, you will need to write a note. If I do not have a note saying they will go home a different way, I will send them home their normal way.
- Please, please make sure your child has a supply of pencils, paper, and a dry erase marker (black works best).
- Please remember, our day starts at 7:30. Students switch classes at 7:50. Every minute of our day is precious. Thank you.
- It is very cold in my classroom. Please send a sweatshirt or jacket for your child to have if they are complaining about the room temperature.
Language Arts Notes
Although school has just started, we have been hard at work focusing on our first skill, story structure. We will work on this skill for a few weeks as we strive to use the components of story structure (plot, conflict, resolution, characters, and setting) to make connections between events and predict future events. We will also take our beginning of the year SRI tests to establish our lexile at this point. This should give both your child and myself good data from which to select appropriate reading materials.
In Writer's Workshop, we have discussed prefixes and simple subjects and predicates. We will begin a focus on fragments and complete sentences in an effort to help improve our sentence writing before we begin paragraph writing and compositions.
Social Studies Notes
Our classes hit the ground running in Social Studies. Your child will have their first Social Studies test of the year on Wednesday, September 7. A study guide went home this past Wednesday. Students will need to know their city, county, county seat, state, state capital, country, country capital, continent, what ocean touches our state, and cardinal and intermediate directions. Don't worry, spelling will not count.
We will also begin our study of North Carolina by reviewing the three regions of our state. Students will have guided notes that we complete in class to guide them through these lessons.
