The second semester is off to a great start! Throughout the semester, it is important that students stay caught up on their learning. Attending school everyday is a way to ensure students do not fall behind. It is also important that students demonstrate their learning by turning in their assignments on time.

During advisory last Friday, students were given the option to continue using the Missing Assignment Plan form we used towards the end of first semester if they found it helpful. It is a great way to reflect on any missing assignments and make a plan to get caught up if they have missing assignments. Students may get copies of the form every week from the office or their teachers (see form below).

Any student who received an "F" or a partial credit last semester will be required to monitor their grades and assignments every week using the Academic Monitoring form (see form below). The form will have requirements students need to follow to better ensure their success of passing all of their classes this semester. As a reminder, there is additional afterschool support for all students (see schedule below). If one of these days do not work, please make arrangements with teachers for another time that will.

Skyward:

Students and Parents/Guardians can monitor grades and missing assignments throughout the semester using Skyward. Parents/guardians needing assistance in accessing their Skyward account can find helpful information and login support on our district website: CLICK HERE.

The Stanwood-Camano School District, through a grant from T-Mobile’s Project 10Million, has hotspots available to those students who do not have internet access available at their homes and need service to extend their learning.

The hotspot allows for 100GB of data. That’s enough data for 140 hours of streaming school videos or 5,000 hours of internet research or 200 hours of online college test prep!

Attendance at school is extremely important! Students should miss no more than 9 days of school each year to stay engaged, successful and on track to graduation. Students with high absenteeism, regardless of the reason, struggle to keep up on their learning and their grades. Students need passing grades to earn credit towards graduation. By being at school most of the days of the year, students receive valuable instruction and have an easier time keeping up on assignments. It is also important to make any appointments outside of school hours as much as possible to increase student attendance at school.

Students needing additional support in the classes have an opportunity to work with teachers after school. The school district is adding text messaging capability to our school communication system, which currently uses phone calls and emails. The system will be configured to send text messages to cell phone numbers whose recipients have agreed to receive them.

Many of you already received a text from 67587 earlier this week requesting you to opt-in to receive important informational text messages from your child’s school. You simply need to Reply Y to confirm (messaging and data rates may apply).

Alternatively, you can text “Y” to 67587 to opt-in to receive texts. In the future, if a recipient’s cellphone number is changed or a new number added to our information system database, the new number will automatically be sent an opt-In message.

After School Art is every Thursday from 2:10 - 3:40 PM. All Lincoln Academy and Lincoln Hill High School students are able to attend. Students interested in this opportunity can contact Mr. Clack (rclack@stanwood.wednet.edu)

It is important that students come to school with their Chromebooks fully charged everyday. Please make sure Chromebooks are plugged in every evening so that they will not need to be charged during the school day. Students will then not need to bring their Chromebook charger to school and risk losing it.

The nomination period is now open for Stanwood-Camano School District’s Highly Capable Program. The class is for exceptionally advanced learners in reading and math for students in grades K-12.

Supporting Student Success:

Our teachers work hard to support students academically everyday. Partnering with students and parents/guardians in this work is very important. Supporting students in staying caught up on their work and turning in any missing assignments is very important not only for student learning, but also in maintaining grades that will earn credits towards graduation.

Below are some steps you can take at home to support students academically:

• Review any missing assignments with your student by having your student login to their Skyward account. Locate the missing work and support your student in completing it. You may reach out to teachers with any questions you have.

• Review assignments with low scores and have students ask their teachers how they can redo an assignment or retake an assessment to show their new learning to earn a better grade.

• Arrange a time for students to get additional time and support from their teacher. Please refer to the Student Support section below in this newsletter for days of the week students can stay after school for additional support. (NOTE: If a specific day/time does not work in the student's schedule based on the teacher schedule below, please contact the teacher to find another day/time that will work).

We see our students working hard everyday and we are here to support them in their learning. Please do not hesitate to reach out to our teachers if you have any question.

As the weather forecasts indicate, we may see cold weather this winter. Our Superintendent, Dr. Rumbaugh, has shared with everyone how we make the determination to delay or close schools due to ice, snow, flooding, etc.

• Safety first! We consider the safety of our children on buses, our student drivers, families driving and walking to school, and the safety of our staff, especially our bus drivers.

• We monitor weather patterns using multiple methods 24/7. In particular, we use a tool called Accuweather that is specifically designed to support school districts in looking ahead at weather patterns.

• When there is a concern about school starting on time, our staff begins driving the roads throughout the district as early as 2 a.m. We take photos, check road conditions, monitor traffic, look for hazards, etc. We typically drive the roads multiple times in the early morning to determine if conditions are improving, worsening, or staying the same.

• We strive to decide about the school day by 5 a.m. Once the decision is made, we begin communicating with families and staff. We communicate through:

Predicting the weather is a challenge, and our primary goal is to ensure that the roads are safe, our campuses are easy to navigate, and the weather does not impede a safe school day.

Students, please remember that LHHS is a closed campus. Students must stay in designated areas at all times and this includes during the lunch hour. Sitting in cars or leaving campus during anytime of the school day is not allowed.
