Encouraging Reading

We know that reading at home with your child makes a difference. Just 20 minutes each night can add up to 60 hours of additional reading time! Our students sketched pictures of reading at home and we know you would be thrilled to see how positively they feel about reading. We encourage you to sit side by side with your child to read, even if you are reading different things. After your reading, chat about what you have read.

Every EKD student will go home with a book this summer from the proceeds of our Spring Book Fair. Thank you to our PTA, Mrs. Dawson, and Mrs. Anders for supporting this give back each year!

We also will be hosting a Summer Reading Incentive. More information coming home soon!

Summer School RSVPs

Invitations were sent last week and we are excited to see RSVP's coming back. If you received an invitation for your child, please fill it out and return it as soon as possible. If you need a new copy, please let your child's teacher know.

Our theme is an EKD Campout, so we’ll have tents in each classroom as giveaway prizes the last day of camp. We will also have flashlights, Legos and K’nex kits as incentives. Every child will have free books to take home. We’ll have camp time together in the Learning Commons with a tent and “campfire." Our academic focus will be on reading and math facts with arts integration projects.

Coming Events:

Mark Your Calendar for our EKD Open House

Each year we kick off the school year with our Open House where families have the opportunity to get to meet and greet with one another and students get to see their new classrooms and meet their teachers. Mark your calendar for August 16th from 3:30-5:00pm.

News from the Counselor

This month, I am excited to announce that my family and I are expecting a new baby boy. I will be taking a leave of absence during this time. Samantha Gastley will be taking over in my absence. Ms. Gastley comes to us fresh from her internship at Smithsburg High School. She will be a wonderful addition to our team while I am away. If you need any support from the counseling center, do not hesistate to call her at 301-766-8136 or email at gastlsam@wcps.k12.md.us

This summer, I will once again be featuring the summer of opportunities video series. Each video episode focuses on a variety of learning experiences. Included with each episode is a list of helpful resources and activities. Students who complete an activity from the series over the summer will be entered into a grand-prize drawing to celebrate summer learning.

As we move closer to the end of the year, I celebrate the wonderful year of challenging, connecting, and creating to achieve success. I leave the year proud of the wonderful work of students and their passion to achieve their goals and dreams.

Kindergarten is Coming to EKD

We will miss those of you who are moving on to middle school and those of you who will be attending different schools next year. Redistricting will bring some changes to our school as we say goodbye to some of our wonderful families. It will also bring many new families as we welcome Kindergarten to EKD. We are excited to welcome Bethany House as one of our new Kindergarten teachers. Our second K teacher will be announced soon. This is a wonderful opportunity to bring our community together under one roof. If you know someone who has not yet registered for Kindergarten, please encourage them to stop by the school to see Mrs. Shank to complete enrollment paperwork.

Mrs. Dell Announces Retirement

Mrs. Dell has announced her retirement and will be leaving us at the end of this school year. She will be missed but we know that she is also very excited about this new phase of her life. We encourage you to send her a note to let her know how much she was appreciated and will be missed.
