Hi Hansen Students, Parents, and Families!

Welcome to October! The first month has flown by and his been filled with daily highlights and celebrations as students and staff have had a terrific opening to the school year! Thank you, as well, for your continued patience and support as we work out some of the transportation pieces, and we have definitely seen some improvement this week in both our arrival and dismissal. Please continue to reach out with questions and feedback, and once again, thank you and we appreciate your partnership!

Please enjoy some of this week's highlights below...

Creating a Culture of Equity, Achievement, Inspiration, and Joy!

Shelter In Place Drill This Morning

This morning around 10:30, in collaboration with the Canton Police Department, the Hansen School conducted a Shelter In Place drill. This was a practice drill, and there was no emergency. During the drill, students remained in their classrooms and staff was asked to close and lock their doors while continuing with instruction and classroom routines as they normally would. School administration and School Resource Officers walked the building and checked that interior doors were locked and that hallways were clear. The drill lasted for about five minutes before we returned to the normal routines of the day.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or if your child(ren) needs any support in processing any portion of today's drill.

STAR Parent Reports Going Home Today

Today, students brought home copies of the Fall STAR reports for parents/guardians. As you may know, the STAR assessment is given in the Fall, Winter, and Spring, allowing staff to identify student strengths, areas for growth, and plan instruction and support for all students.

If you have any questions after reviewing your child's Spring STAR report, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child's teacher or any member of administration.

Items Brought From Home

We are noticing that students are bringing many items from home into school each day. These items, such as Pokemon cards, beyblades, and other toys, should be kept at home whenever possible. Unfortunately, the adults at school can not be responsible for these belongings, and we have had several recent conversations with students who have lost items or had things break while at school. To avoid students becoming upset, again, we kindly ask that students refrain from bringing items to school. We appreciate your support with this, and please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions.

Parking

As a friendly reminder, we kindly ask that parents/guardians park only in marked spaces and that the parking lot on the side of the building be reserved for staff only. I know space is limited, and during dismissal, ample parking is available next door at the Galvin Middle School along the front driveway or in their parking lot. In addition, during dismissal, please do not park in the driveway closest to Pecunit St. This area is meant to be kept clear for our school vans and for select students and families.

Thank you for your support.

Cantonstock 2022!

Cantonstock is the annual music extravaganza that showcases hundreds of student musicians representing all performing ensembles in the Canton schools, and is the primary fundraiser for MusicCounts, the volunteer, non-profit group dedicated to supporting all music programs in all the Canton Public Schools!

The mission is to raise funds for music programming for all students! Visit our website at: www.MusicCountsinCanton.org

Here are several ways you can help:

 Sponsor a Student for Cantonstock

T-shirt orders must be received by October 14th! Each student who receives $50 in sponsors will receive this year’s version of the popular Cantonstock T-Shirt! Shirts are 100% Cotton and the colors change each year so students enjoy collecting them as they progress through the schools! (Additional students in the same household only need to raise $15 each to qualify for a shirt too!)

 Be an Individual Sponsor

This option gives you different donation levels to select from and isn't tied to a specific student or deadline. We'll be happy to recognize your contribution on our website, social media, and other channels too!

 Be a Business or Organizational Sponsor

We’re so grateful to the businesses and organizations for their past support, and hope they continue again this year. We’d really love to add new business and organizational sponsors too! Please view our current and previous list of sponsors and be sure to support
them!

Health Screenings - Reminder

The health office will be conducting state mandated screenings for vision, hearing, postural and heights/weights (BMI). Grades 4 & 5 will be done on Tuesday, October 4. Grades 2 & 3 on Thursday, October 6. Grades K & 1 will be done on Thursday, October 13.

If your child has a medical condition excluding them from the mandated health screenings, please provide the health office with a physician signed letter for exclusion.

Below is information from the Canton Public Schools Handbook regarding the

screening policy:

SCREENINGS

Health screenings are mandated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and are conducted in the following grades at the Hansen School.

  • Vision: Grades 1-5.

  • Hearing: Grades K-3

  • Body Mass Index (BMI): Grades 1 and 4

  • Spinal Screening: Grade 5

* If a parent wishes to waive the state mandated screening for BMI or postural screenings, a request in writing must be submitted to the school nurse prior to the scheduled time for those screenings. Parents that wish to waive the BMI screenings must send in a letter to the health office annually stating their wishes.

Parents/guardians are notified in writing when a student does not pass their health screening.

School nurses will work with families to obtain the appropriate referrals and follow-up services as needed.

Grade 5 Spinal Screenings: Girls please bring a bathing suit top, halter top or sports top. Boys will be asked to remove their shirts. This will take place in a private room next to the nurse’s office.

As always, feel free to call or email Nurse Bethany or Nurse Kathy with any questions or concerns.
