Benton Weekly Update

Week 12: November 2-6, 2020

November has arrived!

There are 30 days in November, but with Veterans' Day and Thanksgiving Week, we are only in school for 15 of those days. Despite that, this month is action-packed, and this week's Update has a lot of information in it!

This month we will be celebrating Native American/First People's Month and showcasing Native American Visual & Performing Artists, honoring our Veterans, collecting canned goods for families and people in need, and (hopefully) connecting with our own families for Thanksgiving. November is also a month when many of us reflect on the people and things we are thankful for.

Each month, the teachers select students whose work and attitude towards learning stands out. Our October Students of the Month are showcased below.

Reminders:

  • The PTSA will continue to collect clothing all year, donations can be placed in the green and white USAgain bin located near the big sliding gate in the school parking lot.

Maria Tallchief ~ Prima Ballerina

The daughter of an Osage Indian father and a Scottish-Irish mother, Maria Tallchief (1925-2013) was one of the most brilliant American ballerinas of the 20th century. She grew up at a time when many American dancers adopted Russian stage names, but Ms. Tallchief, proud of her Indian heritage, refused to do so. In 1996, Tallchief became one of only five artists to receive the Kennedy Center Honors for their artistic contributions in the United States. That same year, the dancer was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame, and in 1999, Tallchief was awarded the National Medal of Arts, the highest award given to artists and arts patrons by the U.S. government. You can find out more about Maria Tallchief here.

Log into your period 4A Zoom 9-10, then work on other assignments, projects, homework, reading from 10am-3pm.

Spotlight on Learning: Beginning Band & Orchestra

In Beginning Band and Orchestra students are utilizing SmartMusic to aid in their daily practice. SmartMusic gives music students instant feedback on the accuracy of their notes and rhythms, allowing them to continually improve in the absence of a teacher. SmartMusic, when used daily, is an extremely effective tool for the young musician!

Spotlight on Learning: Studio Art

In Studio Art, students chose a hero to commemorate or memorialize with an art piece. They showed each step along the way as they planned and persevered! Katelyn Campos chose Frida Kahlo, a Mexican artist, because, "She went through tough times when she was younger and her art helped her cope with her pain after a bus crash. I am going to be making a flower crown. This represents her because in her self-portraits she often wore flower crowns."

Please know I am here to support you all in any way possible!

Have a great week,

Ms. Allie
