Message From the Principal
Happy New Year! I hope you all had a restful holiday and made some special memories with your families! It was such a joy to be back in school with your children this week!
As we settle into the winter months, which are such an exciting and intense learning time for primary grades students, I want to strongly encourage you to make sure your students are in school - on time - every day. There is such a strong correlation between attendance and student achievement!
We will be refining some morning arrival procedures in the next few weeks to get our students into class more efficient. If you already have experience with the Dieringer Heights procedures, I'm sure it will all be familiar to you. We'll be asking you to:
1. Make sure your student is seated on the side of the car nearest the sidewalk so they can get out and move to safety quickly. Do not plan to get out of the car to help them out; this creates logjams. Help them learn how to manage this task independently. If they need extra help, please park your car and walk them to the door.
2. Once your student is out of the car, please slip out of the lineup of cars and depart the parking lot - carefully.
The school doors open at 8:35. The tardy bell rings at 8:45 AM. Please plan your mornings so that your students can be in their seat ready to learn at 8:45....
Next Friday is crazy hat day here at Lake Tapps! Pull out your favorite hats and get ready to have some fun!
The following Monday, January 16, is a day to celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King. We will be studying his life here at school, culminating in a performance by the Tacoma Broadway Center for the Performing Arts on January 18.
Have a lovely week!
Sincerely,
Paula Bond

Message from the School Counselor
Hello and happy January! Our character trait for the month of January is Honesty. Students have been discussing honesty in class, sharing examples in our weekly video and practicing 'living truthfully with words, actions and thoughts'. Our district curriculum, Character Strong, offers a Home Connection with our character trait learning. While students discuss and practice these traits at school, there are some great conversation starters for home. This week, I encourage your family to try this activity:
Create a simple sign with some emotion words or faces/emojis. Choose a space where your family can see emotion words/faces near an entrance of a space. Each time someone walks through the entrance this week, have them tap the emotion they are feeling and name their feelings Honestly. Work together to help regulate or manage those emotions to be more confident, calm, or focused.
-Katie Leslie, Lake Tapps Counselor
