State of KCA

Big picture

Dear KCA Parents and Students

To preserve space in our Smores Newsletter Mrs. Love will not being including the State of KCA, but reassured all is well. Instead, we are sharing a great opportunity for our 9th - 12th grade students. Please take the time to read and hopefully all who qualify will apply.

Do you know an outstanding or deserving teenager who would enjoy and benefit from a fun and educational trip to Washington, D.C.? If so encourage them to apply for the 2019 Government-in-Action Youth Tour.

Grayson-Collin Electric Cooperative requests your help finding candidates for the Government-in-Action Youth Tour, a weeklong, all-expenses-paid trip to the nation’s capital. Grayson-Collin EC will send three students on the 2019 Youth Tour, scheduled for June 12-21, 2019. The statewide trade association, Texas Electric Cooperatives, coordinates the trip.

Students selected for this opportunity join more than 150 of their peers from Texas and another 1,900 from across the U.S. on this trip of a lifetime. Inspired by Lyndon B. Johnson’s desire to give young people insight into national government, Youth Tour expands participants’ horizons while educating them about government and cooperatives. Electric cooperatives in Texas have participated in Youth Tour since 1965.

The trip starts with a day in Austin, where students tour the Texas State Capitol, Capitol Visitors Center, Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum and Texas State Cemetery. Activities include seeing a show at the Bullock IMAX and Texas Spirit Theater and dining at the famous food trailers in South Austin.

Once in Washington, students partake in guided tours of historic sites, museums, and congressional offices, where they meet with their U.S. representatives. Entertainment opportunities on the trip include seeing a performance at the Kennedy Center and going on a dinner and dancing cruise on the Potomac River. Participants also attend Youth Day, hosted by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, for a day of learning and inspiration.

Please encourage students from your school to apply by 5:00 PM February 8, 2019. Applications can be mailed (must be postmarked before February 8th), emailed, or hand delivered. Applications will be judged by a panel of judges who will then schedule interviews with the top candidates. Winners will be announced after interviews. For your convenience, I have attached a folder that includes the application as well as printable posters and brochures:

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. I would be happy to schedule a time to meet with you or your students personally. Thank you for helping Grayson-Collin EC improve the quality of life of its members, including youths.

Pro-Life Statement of KCA's Host Churches

Statement written by the Elders of EBC and supported by First Anna regarding the new anti-life law in New York that allows a woman to end the life of her child up to the point of birth.

As a faith family, we are deeply grieved by the decision of the state of New York to pass a law that allows for such a reckless disregard of human life by legalizing the murder of unborn children up to the point of their birth. We vehemently disagree with this law and any other legislation that supports abortion or the disregard for human life in any other way. As a Church we believe God is the Giver of life and all life is precious and has inherent worth, value, and dignity. We are pro-life from the womb to the tomb. From the unborn, to the disabled, to the orphan, to the elderly - we are pro-life!

The President of our Southern Baptist Convention, JD Greear and two of his staff members, Spence Shelton and Chris Pappalardo give us some helpful things we can do in response to be light in the growing darkness.

What Can We Do?

Feeling the weight of this tragedy, however, is only a first step. As a church, we must respond. Let me propose three steps:

First, we as the church must take a stand. Throughout history, the church has shared very few heroes with the world. But those we do share are men and women who stood up and gave a voice to those who did not have one. William Wilberforce did this for the innumerable slaves streaming into our country in the nineteenth century. Dietrich Bonheoffer did this for the church in Nazi Germany. Martin Luther King, Jr. did this for the oppressed African American community during the Civil Rights Movement. We celebrate them now, but these figures were opposed in their time. Will we have the courage to do the same?

Second, we need to educate ourselves on how to help women who are considering abortion. It is not enough to make a grand statement against the practice. It is not enough to change legislation. We must cultivate an environment that recognizes the need of these women and serves them with compassion and grace. We must learn how to interact, one-on-one, with women (and their families) who face the challenges of unplanned pregnancies. And we must learn to respond with grace to those who have had abortions. Organizations like Pregnancy Support Services are invaluable in this effort.

Finally, to the mother who has had an abortion, the message is simple: Jesus loves you...and so does Elmont Baptist Church. There are grace and forgiveness at the cross of Jesus. None of us is too far removed from the grace of God. None of us, no matter how ashamed or confused or hurt we feel, are broken beyond repair. In Christ, you are washed, forgiven, made whole again. In Christ, you are no longer judged based on your right and wrongdoings. Jesus loved sinners and died for them. And He receives all who come to Him with a repentant heart, regardless of their past.

Jesus takes even the tragedy of death and overturns it with the triumph of resurrection. Every child is precious in His sight, and one day we will be reunited with the millions of unborn taken from us in this life where we will marvel in the grace and power of God from eternity. God will wipe away every tear from our eyes and make every sad thing come untrue.

In closing, EBC, First Anna and KCA, call upon you to always respond in prayer, being faithful to pray for all of those who are considering abortion and for those in our country who are in high positions of leadership as we are instructed to do in 1 Timothy 2:1-2. Pray that God will give us hearts of compassion as we help those who are contemplating abortion, and that He will change the hearts and minds of those responsible for legislation in our country.
