MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear CMS Families,
I apologize for the length of this update, but there's so much to share after an eventful and FIVE day school week. Our Science and Fine Arts Fair was a resounding success! I was thoroughly impressed with the exceptional performances and creative projects presented by our talented students. Mr. Hilston's STEM room received a fantastic makeover with the introduction of new STEM tables(see pics below). These improvements enhance the learning environment and provide our students with even better resources for exploration and discovery. THANK YOU PTO!! Thanks to cooperative weather, admin, teachers, support staff, and recess monitors were delighted for our students to have outdoor recess! It's always a joy to see our students enjoy the fresh air and engage in physical activities in our outdoor spaces.
CROSSWALK SAFETY
On Wednesday, school administration, SRO Elam and Officer Snyder met with our student walkers to discuss safety as they travel home. Our primary topic was crosswalk safety. We emphasized the significance of using the identified crosswalks on North Street and the potential dangers of not adhering to the crosswalk rules. The students were very receptive to our discussion and I will continue to remind them periodically to use the crosswalk.
Specifically, when heading south on North Street the designated 20 MPH school zone does not end until after the crosswalk. We kindly request that all drivers continue to travel at 20 MPH until they have completely passed the crosswalk area. Share this reminder with other parents and drivers who may be traveling in the area.
BLIZZARD BAGS
Last week Chardon Local School District had our fifth calamity day of the 2023-24 school year. If we exceed the allotted five (5) Calamity Days authorized in Ohio Revised Code 3313.48, the make-up plan known as “blizzard bags'' will be instituted. The lessons, which can be made up in exchange for two (2) days of instruction, can be found on the teacher’s Google Classroom by 10:00 am on the day of a calamity day. If you do not have internet access, please inform your child’s teacher so paper copies can be provided for you. Students who do not complete the lessons in the given time frame could receive an incomplete or failing grade, in addition to receiving an unexcused absence for the day that the blizzard bag replaces instruction.
BOOK FAIR
The book fair will be open from February 6th - February 8th for students to visit and purchase books during the school day. A schedule has been created and your child's ELA teacher will share their assigned date. Payment methods are Cash, Credit Card and Checks made payable to Chardon Local Schools. You also have an option to set up an ewallet for your student at the following link:
https://www.scholastic.com/bf/chardonmiddleschool1
PLEASE NOTE: We are obligated to collect sales tax for all purchases made during the Fair, regardless of the shopper, product, or payment method. There is only one exception: no sales tax for purchases made by the school with school funds for the school's use.
JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT-VOLUNTEERS
Chardon Middle School is partnering with Junior Achievement, a nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring and preparing students for success in a global economy. This program provides valuable insights into financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and work readiness.
We are seeking enthusiastic parents to volunteer for a one-day commitment to deliver the Junior Achievement program in our classrooms. No prior teaching experience is necessary, as Junior Achievement provides all the necessary training and materials.
If you are interested in volunteering for this rewarding experience, please click HERE to sign up.
Enjoy your weekend.

OHIO ALL STATE CHILDREN'S CHORUS
On February 1, 2024, six of our CMS 4th and 5th graders participated in the Ohio All-State Children's Chorus in a performance at the Ohio Music Education Association's annual conference in Columbus, Ohio. Our students had to attend several regional rehearsals in northeast Ohio and a full group rehearsal in Columbus prior to their performance. These students had to apply and audition to be in the group, and this is a huge honor for them! Way to
#TopperUp, Keelie Hagan, SJ Moore, Abran Gonzales, Charlotte Polak, Zoe Williams, and Nate Latessa! Congratulations!
CONGRATULATIONS
The 6th grade girls basketball travel team for their FIRST PLACE finish in the Kenston League! Congratulations!
G.O.A.T. AWARDS
Recently, CMS has started a teacher recognition initiative, the G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time) Award. Since its implementation, students have enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to nominate outstanding teachers who go above and beyond in their commitment to education.
Recent G.O.A.T. recipients were:
- Mrs. Steinmetz and Mrs. Curitore
- Mrs. Monsman
- Mr. Hilston
I wanted to share a few student referrals:
Mr. Hilston is very lenient and gives us many opportunities for fun projects. He also never yells when someone isn't behaving. He makes learning a journey of excitement. He even lets me doodle during class because it helps me focus. He also lets me borrow his resources. And finally, I told him he should get one, so much so I even made him one out of cardboard.
Mrs Steinmetz. Her class is my favorite part of the day and she takes her time to help me with stuff I don't understand.

The incredible success of our recent Science and Fine Arts Fair, was an opportunity for our students' critical thinking skills to take center stage. The fair was a showcase of their creativity, analytical prowess, and hard work. Their projects reflected a thoughtful and systematic approach to problem-solving, demonstrating a level of critical thinking that goes beyond the classroom. From innovative science experiments to expressive fine arts performances, every project allowed students to showcase their talents.
