Maroon Mingle
Thanks to everyone who has been coming to the Maroon Mingles. It's been fun seeing everyone! This week we're getting together in Westlake before our big rivalry game.
Where: Las Palomas, 3201 Bee Caves Road, Austin 78746. It's in the same shopping center as CVS and Stein Mart, in the corner by the post office and Great Harvest Bread. I reserved a table for 15 (their largest), if we have more people we can expand to a second table.

Did Someone Say WHATABURGER??
Q&A with Brian Frock
1. What's the best part of your job at Austin High?
Austin High gets a lot of great kids...and I get to work with the best of them! That and I've got to work with so many siblings over the years....multiple kids from one family at the same time or often spread out. I've had a couple of families that were with us for 10 years...that's pretty cool!
2. If you could change one thing about the band, what would it be?
My biggest frustration over the years since I've been here is the fact that one of our main feeder schools is not a true middle school. The K-6 elementary schools in our vertical team cause a huge reduction in numbers making it to the middle school and then of course high school. Middle schools usually retain about 90-95% of their membership between 6th and 7th grade. Too many of the elementary beginners don't make it to middle school, so we lose them before we have a chance.
3. If you were not a band director, what kind of work would you be doing?
If I was not a band director....that's a tough one. It's all I've known. Once upon a time, I considered being an accountant (though that's pretty much what I do now with overseeing the band's budget).
4. What band, musician or composer has had the most influence on your musical life? Can you explain why?
I have several teachers who influenced me in tremendous ways. The top 4 would include my high school band director Bill Brent, my college saxophone professor Harvey Pittel, and my college band directors Glenn Richter and Paula Crider.
5. What song is at the top of your playlist right now?
It changes daily. My MP3 player has like 700 songs at the current time from a variety of genre. I recently came across the musical "Dear Evan Hanson", and of course our current show exposed me to the musical "Chess in Concert." So currently those have been played the most.
