HAIL HOLY QUEEN
Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy,
hail, our life, our sweetness and our hope.
To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve: to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.
Turn then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus, O merciful, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary!
Amen.
This morning the staff and children from Years Three to Six joined with Staff and children from St Maria Goretti school to celebrate Mass for the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary which commemorates Mary being taken, body and soul, to heaven. I have chosen the above depiction of Mary’s Assumption as it shows Mary looking down upon us in a fashion similar to the words in the “Hail Holy Queen”; Turn then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us. We don’t pray to Mary but rather through her asking her to intercede on our behalf and be, as stated in the prayer, our Advocate. There have been numerous times when Mary has appeared with the most notable Lourdes, France in 1858, Fatima, Portugal in 1917 and Medjugorje in Bosnia Herzegovina in 1981. Mary’s constant request with all of these apparitions is that we continue to pray the Rosary. This is what many of our staff and some children do each Tuesday morning at 8.00am in the Mother Mary Piazza so if you see our group gathering feel free to join us even if you’re unsure of how to pray the Rosary.
Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the Book Week Parade yesterday morning but my good friend Gandalf from the Lord of the Rings trilogy has informed me that there was an amazing array of very creative costumes being worn by both the children and the staff. He said he was unsure just what was so Magic about some of the staff pretending to be children while riding on a big yellow bus but at his age it is understandable that he’s not always up to date with some of the more modern literature. What did impress him, though, was the clever ideas that the parents had come up with to make such great costumes. Congratulations to Mrs (Ruby Lee) Sarmardin, her band of Library Monitors and Mr (Moses) Tyrrell for facilitating a great morning’s entertainment for everyone.
CONGRATULATIONS!
A few weeks ago Miss Danielle Smith asked me for a day off to attend to some family business. That day off was yesterday and much to everyone’s surprise Miss Smith isn’t returning to school. Don’t be worried, though, because Miss Smith’s family business was that she was getting married to Patrick Bewley and so Mrs Bewley has returned to school today. Danielle and her new husband Pat spent a wonderful day with their family and she is now back in Pre Primary preparing for their Assembly tomorrow morning. I’m sure you all join with me in wishing both Danielle and Pat every happiness for their future together.
…AND MORE CONGRATULATIONS!
Carmel Kempton has recently informed me that, after 29½ years at Notre Dame, she has decided to retire, effective from 29 August. I’ve often heard it said that you just know when it’s the right time for you to retire and Carmel has reached that time when she is finally putting her own welfare ahead of that of others. We all wish Carmel every happiness in her retirement and hope that she enjoys relaxing with her family and friends.
OUTSIDE SCHOOL HOURS CARE (OSHC)
For some time now the School Board, in conjunction with Catholic Education WA, has been exploring the option of introducing a before and after school and vacation care facility at our school from the beginning of 2020. Many parents have anecdotally told me that, if such a facility was in place, they would certainly use it. Well now it’s up to you, we have done all of the preliminary work and now must establish whether there really is a need for this at our school. All families will be receiving a survey via email in the next couple of days and we ask that you complete this as quickly as possible and return it so that we can get planning underway. It is envisaged that the OSHC will operate in the Parish Hall with the children having supervised access to some of the school grounds.
This initiative has been in the planning phase for quite some time and we would appreciate your assistance in moving it to the next stage.
P&F COCKTAIL PARTY
Tickets are now available for this great evening to be held on 19 October at Forster Park on Abernethy Rd. Due to the size of the venue there are only 200 tickets so go online to ensure you don’t miss out.

YEAR 1 CLASS NEWS
What a fun few weeks we have had in Year One, starting the term with the wonderful 1M assembly followed by a walking excursion to Signal Hill and Volcano Park in Belmont. Edu Dance and Makerspace have also started this term and we are enjoying becoming creative, imaginative learners!
RELIGION
We have read storys and learnt information about Mary MacKillop, Australia's first saint. It was her feast day last week on the 8 August and we enjoyed celebrating her life.
ENGLISH
This term we are learning how to write recounts. We have enjoyed listening to our friends tell us about the fun things they do over the weekend before writing about our own adventures. Did you know you must include who, what, where, when and how you felt when you write a recount? On Wednesday we enjoyed our Book Week parade, afterwards we read about some of the amazing characters we came dressed as. Reading really is our secret power! Check out some of our amazing Book Week costumes.
MATHS
We are continuing to learn about place value this term – some of us even know our place value into the thousands. We had fun making place value monsters and place value castles out of hundreds, tens and ones.
GEOGRAPHY
After our walking excursion to Signal Hill we each asked interesting questions that we are going to continue to explore this term during our Floorbook learning time. Come in and see some of the questions we want to explore. Thank you to all the parents who came along to help us.
YR 3 BOOK WEEK CHARACTERS
BOOK WEEK PARADE
On Wednesday morning, Notre Dame staff and students brought books to life by transforming themselves into book characters. We danced and paraded up to the stage where Mr Tyrrell (aka Moses) interviewed students about their book character. The morning was a great success and we thank everyone who helped students make and create their costumes!
Prizes for the best dressed and most imaginative will be announced at Friday morning assembly. Book Week officially starts on the 17th – 23rd August – the Library will be hosting a range of activities to support children’s literacy and love of books. During library time and at lunchtimes students can enter the following competitions:
- Guess the Book - By the first line. Students guess books by the first line – 20 books to guess – these will be placed around the library.
- Create your own book mark/colouring-in competition
- Storybook Competition
Students create a small book to display in the library.
Students can create their own superhero comic book.
AND…more activities at lunchtime…
- Choose a superhero to dress up as and fly through the air with our Green Screen in the Library
- Decorate and make your own superhero mask
- Draw and design your own superhero

INTERSCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL - THURSDAY 1 AUGUST
In Week 2 selected students were chosen to represent Notre Dame at the annual Interschool Cross Country Carnival at Tomato Lake. The students came into the day after a few weeks of training to be well prepared for the day. I would like to congratulate all students on how they represented the school, demonstrating outstanding sportsmanship and their own personal efforts throughout the day. Special mention to the Year 6 group who started and finished the day strong for our school. It wasn’t our year this year but it was great to see so many fantastic runners from all schools give their all on the day. Well done to St Emilie’s who took out the crown this year! Special thanks to Miss Fimmano, Mrs Boyle, Mrs Davidson, Mrs Kempton, Mr Seers. Miss Rognetta and the wonderful parents who have assisted with both running club last term and interschool training this term. Thank you as well to Mrs Notte, Bro. Stephen, Mrs Chilton and Ms Horton who helped with various jobs on the day.
