Emily Carr
June 2016
Message from Administration
The end of another successful school year is here. Academically, the staff have been working very hard to ensure that all required curriculum expectations have been addressed and all assessments have been completed in order to provide an accurate 'picture' of each student for the final term. Correspondingly, the students have been working hard to complete all of their assignments and projects. Reports will go home with your child on Wednesday, June 29th.
To ensure that school is not "all work and no play", the staff, school council and parents have been equally busy organizing and supervising an abundance of out-of-classroom experiences: field trips, walking/ running club, track and field, special athlete track meet, volunteer tea, graduation, yearbook, student leadership, Me to We, and "Carr"nival.
Special thanks to all of the staff and parent volunteers for your daily support in providing Emily Carr students with so many valuable and varied learning experiences. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all volunteers, in whatever capacity you assist our staff and students of Emily Carr. From the parents who deliver milk, pizza and subs to our School Council members, we thank you ALL for making Emily Carr a wonderful place.
Welcome and Farewell
Each school year it is natural to anticipate changes to school staff. Change promotes professional growth and in some cases provides time to fulfill personal and family needs. We wish the very best to the following staff who will not be with us in September and thank them for their many significant contributions to the growth and development of students in our school:
Mrs. Kim - moving to Kilbride Public School
Mlle Jennings - moving to Alexander's Public School
Ms.Graham - moving to Mackenzie Smith Bennett Public School
Mrs. Khan, Ms. Tan, and Ms. Lepine - enjoying time with their babies
Miss Connor, Miss Nicholson, Miss Seeley, Miss Wach, Mr. Vinthers, Mrs. Robertson - continuing as supply teachers for our school board
Miss Haslett - moving to Abbey Lane Public School
Miss Hamilton - continuing as an ECE in our school board
We wish all these wonderful people the very best in their new journeys!
As we say goodbye to some, we extend a warm Emily Carr welcome to the following staff:
Ms. Willson - welcome to your new teaching position as a French teacher
Ms. Nakahara - as our new ESL teacher
As well, some of our staff will remain on their maternity leaves, returning at various times throughout the year (Ms. Stevens, Ms. Allmark, Ms. Jansma, Ms. Hudson). Their replacements will be determined by the school board later in August.

Class Lists
Thank You, Thank You Very Much
Welcome to the volunteer tea,
You’re here to chat and drink with glee.
We thank you for giving us your time,
So we’ve written you an appreciation rhyme.
From organizing pizza to sorting milk,
You do so very much to help.
Supervising field trips and lunchroom duty,
You’re willing to put up with us even when we’re moody.
Working with students who are learning to read,
Giving them the extra help that they need.
Organizing Carrnival so we could have fun,
Bringing in jumpy castles so we could hop, play, and run.
Participating during World Tour Night,
Serving delicious food, we enjoyed every bite.
Being an audience during concerts and sports,
Cheering “Go Thunderbirds” when we’re on the courts.
Each one of you is a super star,
We’re so lucky to have you at Emily Carr.
Thank you, thank you very much,
Now please enjoy this volunteer brunch!

Summer Math
Summer is a great time to learn how math relates to the real world. Math is everywhere!
Help your child prevent “summer learning loss” by taking advantage of the many great opportunities to practice math naturally!
Below are a few ideas to get you started:
- Cooking can involve weighing, measuring, ordering, estimating, adding, multiplying …
- Restaurants and shopping can involve money, number identification, estimating, adding, subtracting, division …
- Parties can involve matching numbers of people to plates, cutlery, area of tables, estimation, multiplication …
- Trips can involve time, distance, budgeting, speed, evaluating various routes, license plate games (e.g. adding or multiplying the numbers on the plate) …
- Home projects can involve estimation, measuring, multiplication …
- Gardening can involve measuring, counting, area, division …
These ideas all demonstrate how much math is involved in our daily lives and will support your child in his or her basic computation and problem-solving skills in natural, fun and real ways.
