STEM Academy @ Henderson Newsletter
Greetings Warrior Families:
This message is from Ms. McCloud, the STEM Assistant Principal here at Henderson Middle School. We are Full STEM Ahead here at Henderson, our students are taking charge of their learning through development of PBL projects, participation in community partnerships, solving community issues through collaboration, communication and creativity and engaging in the engineering design process to solve problems and thinking globally in their STEM Elective course! We are excited to continue to see what each and every student will do today, tomorrow and in the future!

Is there a Hurricane in the Forecast: Science and Math PBL Project:
Students in 6th grade science and math courses were challenged with the task of creating Public Service Announcements to inform the community of the dangers of hurricanes. Utilizing the example of Hurricane Harvey Student shared facts about Hurricane Harvey and its impact and useful tips to stay safe!
Here are some sample projects from Science and Math:
Checkout our Community Partners! Thank you for your continued support of our students!
The STEM Academy at Henderson Middle School has also had the pleasure of working with several community partnerships this year, to get students immersed into STEM!
• The James River Valley Links Incorporated
• Capital One Coders
• VCU Code Beats
• VCU College of Engineering
• Agile4Learners with Capital One
How are Community Partners work with our students...
Each of these programs are infused into our STEM elective course during the school day. Program volunteers, chapter members and leaders and special guest speakers work collectively to develop lessons and activities for students. In addition to this the program facilitators also work closely with teachers to ensure students are able to access the programs provided and provide feedback as needed from both students and teachers on the program’s implementation.
Through participation in these amazing programs students have been provided with opportunities to participate in STEM related activities such as coding, engineering models, and healthy lifestyles through the Links program. For example, the JRV Links program has also provided exposure to STEM careers, exposure to STEM related topics and lessons, guest speakers sharing their experiences in STEM Fields. In addition the VCU code beats program has helped student's develop coding skills to make beats using Sonic Pi software as well as building digital citizenship through the use of live feeds. Moreover, through our partnership with Capital One we have been able to bring forth 2 programs to our STEM academy. The first Capital One Program: Capital One Coders provided students with exposure to block coding, development of problem-solving skills, exploration of creativity and student-centered learning activities during their first semester STEM course. Students who participated also received tech (tablets) to support their program experience with Capital One Coders. Lastly, our most recent partnership with Agile4Learners teaches students SCRUM and Agile principles that will help build their collaboration and teamwork skills to complete projects more efficiently and effectively.
