HISTORY!
- 1945- Japan occupied Laos during the second half of World War 2, after which France regains control over the area.
- 1955- Laos was admitted to the United Nations.
- 1991- A new constitution took effect.
- In the late 1960s and the early 1970s, at the height of the Vietnam War, the United States bombed Lao territory in an attempt to stop supplies and reinforcements from getting to North Vietnamese traps.
PEOPLE AND PLACES!
- 67% of the people in Laos are Buddhist.
- 1.5% of people in Laos are Christian.
- 31.5% of the people are another religion.
- A groom typically gives a gift the the bride's parents for raising her so well.
LIFESTYLE!
- In Laos they have a sport called sepak takraw.
- Pi Mai, the Lao new year holiday is celebrated in our mid-April.
- Lao food is hot and spicy and is usually served with sticky rice.
- Parents have to contribute some money for running the school.
SOCIETY!
- In the city people ride motorbikes.
- In countryside people usually walk or ride bicycles.
- Laos remains a poor country, about 80% of the population works in agriculture.
- The voting age to elect assembly members is 18. Laos adapted this constitution in 1991.
