Fall Update - August 5, 2020
Leadership Corner
August 5, 2020
Dear Nighthawk Family:
We thank you for your continued support and patience during this time. We understand this is a difficult time for everyone and we honor your partnership. We would like to start this letter by reiterating that our administration and teachers were devastated by the news of 100% virtual learning to begin the 2020-21 school year. Our teachers and administrators have invested countless days planning in hopes of returning to face-to-face instruction this fall. Please know that this news was met with sadness, we want nothing more than to have kids back in classrooms and filling our hallways with joy and laughter.
There have been questions around why New Vision does not break from TSD and follow our own path during this time. New Vision Charter School holds a charter agreement through Thompson School District (TSD). As a part of our charter agreement with TSD we agree to follow certain requirements and policies set by the district. One of these areas we follow the district in 100% is student health and safety. If we chose to break from TSD during this time, it would not only impact our charter agreement, it would put us in a very difficult position from the liability standpoint should something happen. We do not take these changes lightly, nor do we underestimate the impact of the changes on the lives of all involved. Please know that we are all affected by the changes that have happened this school year and that we appreciate positive, thoughtful communications regarding any concerns or questions you might have.
It is important to clarify the difference between our online instruction and remote instruction.
Online Instruction
Online Instruction is a semester commitment and will be taught by specific New Vision Charter School Teachers using Florida Virtual Learning. Families have until August 14th to choose this semester-long commitment. Online Florida Virtual Learning Registration
Remote Instruction
The remote instruction is replacing our in-person learning, in response to the Larimer County Health Department’s recommendation to suspend face-to-face instruction until October 16th. These students will be returning to the school when the Larimer County Health Department determines that it is safe. The remote learning structure will use Google Classroom, as well as other digital learning tools that have been purchased to ensure that NVCS students and staff have a well rounded, highly supported, digital learning experience.
For both online and remote learning, families can expect their student(s) to have between three and four hours of work per day. Course content will be available 24/7 online, so students can study at any time and any place. Teachers in both platforms will have office hours when students can get one on one or small group support.
We understand that you may have additional questions regarding what remote instruction will look like and we look forward to sharing this information with you in the coming weeks. Homeroom teachers will be reaching out to families to provide details regarding remote learning in the coming weeks. We have used the feedback from teachers and families regarding last year’s remote learning to improve our practice in that area of remote learning. New Vision has invested in digital learning tools and teacher training to provide every student with the level of excellence in education that New Vision Charter School is known for.
Below, you will find information regarding the schedule for the coming weeks, as well as a brief overview of expectations for remote learning.
