What's Happening this Semester
Eastern Hemisphere - Students are studying the different forms of government that exist in the Eastern Hemisphere. Students are also working on developing the skills of research, so that they are able to effectively find and report on relevant information from credible sources. Eastern Hemisphere is a self-paced course and all information can be found in the Google Classroom.
Language Arts - Students' reading and writing abilities vary enormously when they walk into 7th grade. It takes time to get to know my new students in order to help them grow as readers and writers. I love helping students discover good books that "hook" them on reading and turn them into lifelong readers. As they enjoy their books, they are also strengthening their reading skills as well as their stamina for reading. Growing stronger readers, in turn, develops stronger writers. Students have been writing mostly for personal reasons 1st quarter. I have found the secret to getting students to want to write is to let them write about things that matter to them. Writing instruction is far more effective when students care about writing and believe they have things to say. Laying the foundation for reading/writing workshop has been the focus of 1st quarter.
Pre-Algebra - Students will be learning about operations with positive and negative numbers, similarity and scale factors, and also ratios, percents and proportions. Lecture videos are posted daily so that absent students can follow what is happening in class. All assignments are listed in Google Classroom with a mixture of online and paper assignments. Students generally have nightly homework and should be writing the assignment in their planner each day.
