Message from the Principal
Dear Parents,
My sister-in-law recently got a new job. Her company sent out an email to their employees welcoming her and telling them a little bit about her background. Included was the fact that she is a Six Sigma Yellow Belt. That was news to me. I didn't know she did karate and I have known her for years. I was confused.
Upon further investigation, I learned that a Six Sigma Yellow Belt has nothing to do with karate. Six Sigma is a set of techniques and tools for process improvement. A six sigma process is one in which 99.99966% of all opportunities to produce some feature of a part are statistically expected to be free of defects. Of course everyone in the company understood about a Six Sigma Yellow Belt even though I didn't. That's their world- their jargon.
Jargon refers to special words or expressions that are used by a particular profession or group and are difficult for others to understand. Yep- I sure didn't understand it. But the intended audience was not me- it was the company's employees.
This little episode reminded me that the world of education is full of jargon, too. And as educators, we must be aware of who our audience is when we are sharing information. To communicate clearly without misunderstandings, we must avoid our educational jargon. I will encourage my staff to do so.
I must go now. I am late for my karate lesson.
Sincerely,
Dr. Heck

Major Saver is Back! Read All About It!
Today your child learned about the annual Major Saver fundraiser that the Olathe Public Schools Foundation (OPSF) asks elementary schools to conduct. Students will bring home the packet today and will be asked to sell discount cards throughout the next week and a half. More information regarding collection dates and prizes are listed on the packet.
Half of the money Forest View students raise will directly benefit Forest View Elementary. The Olathe Public Schools Foundation uses the other half of the money raised to help educators purchase resources that the school district cannot afford as well as recognize staff members for their hard work. Here are a few ways that Forest View Elementary has been helped by the OPSF in the last year.
· The OPSF funds $100,000 in classroom grants each school year. At Forest View Elementary, the Olathe Public Schools Foundation funded grants for student leadership and accountability programs, materials for history lessons, eBooks for the library, and items that helped increase the curriculum for the common core standards.
· Fund-A-Need is an innovative, online crowd-funding program supported by the Olathe Public Schools Foundation that directly connects donors with classroom needs. To date, Forest View Elementary has raised $5,300 through the Fund-a-Need program for classroom projects.
· Over the past three years the OPSF has worked with the district to financially support programs that address student mental health needs including: embedding mental health therapists at all high schools; implementing a mental health parent-support speaker series; providing free summer mental health support sessions; and adding social emotional learning and suicide prevention curriculum to schools.
· As our students mature into middle and high school students, they receive the benefit of the Foundation’s $100,000 annual scholarship program; their $120,000 annual commitment to health and wellness of our students; and their efforts to bring industry and university level equipment to our vocational programs and our 21st Century Academies.
As you can see, the Olathe Public Schools Foundation has been very generous to Forest View Elementary students. One way to give back is to participate in this Major Saver fundraiser if possible. School staff and students will continue to benefit from the generosity from the Olathe Public Schools Foundation!
