Mako Messenger
December Edition
Wrapping Up 2020
Families~
The final month of 2020 is upon us. Coming off of eight weeks of distance learning in the spring, then facing two hurricanes, and balancing all that covid has thrown at us, I am incredibly proud of our students and faculty. Attendance rates have stayed at a respectable 94%+ and academics continue to lead the way at OBHS.
In a continued effort to communicate clearly and efficiently with all of our stakeholders, Mako Messenger will be a monthly newsletter regarding the happenings around OBHS. We hope that this helps frame your month, as it will include celebrations, upcoming events, and important deadlines. In addition to receiving it via email, we will also post it to orangebeachhigh.com for your convenience.
Go Makos,
Dr. McCoy

Teachers are Learners
As the Curriculum Leader for OBMHS, I serve teachers as a curriculum and instructional liaison. It is a pleasure to work alongside some of the most dedicated teachers I've ever met. Together we are strengthening our instructional practices, assessment choices, abilities to check for learning, and techniques with technology integration. Our focus is and always will be strong learning environments that promote student achievement.

We the People, presented by OBHS Musical Theatre
The musical theatre department of The Conservatory of Fine Arts will present the musical, "We the People" on Thursday, December 3rd at 7:00 p.m., Friday, December 4th at 7:00 p.m., and Sunday, December 6th at 2:00 p.m. The production will be held in the Orange Beach High School library. Tickets are $10.00 per person and seating is limited due to Covid-19 restrictions. Patrons should be prepared to wear a mask while in attendance.
The rock musical centers around four teenage young women working at Philadelphia Hall in 1776. Told from the teenage perspective, the story focuses on the division amongst the colonists about revolution. Only one-third of the colonists were in favor of revolution; one-third against revolution; and the remaining third were on the fence. In the play, the young women must send their boyfriends to war, and they become our first veterans.
The play and lyrics are written by Darren J. Butler and the music and lyrics are written by award winning Nashville singer/songwriter, Judy Rodman.
Winter Extravaganza
On Wednesday, December 16th the theatre, band, dance, and visual arts departments of the Conservatory of Fine Arts will come together for the first annual, WINTER EXTRAVAGANZA!
The event is free and will be held at the Event Center at the Wharf. Doors to the lobby will open at 5:30 p.m. for patrons to visit our Art Sale benefiting the Visual Arts Department. The performance event will start around 6:00 p.m.
"Each department has come up with some amazing pieces to represent the work we've been doing first semester," according to Darren Butler, Fine Arts Director and Theatre teacher. "Giving these young people a chance to perform is an incredible opportunity. Many of them are trying this for the first time, and they are discovering a passion for it. The Arts provide life-long skills in creativity, team-work, and the application of learned skills from science, math, history, and language arts."
~Darren Butler, MFA
