How to keep a cheetah as your pet
By: Diya H. And Neha G.
Last May, Hein and Kim Schoman told a story of sharing their life with two cheetah cubs raised with their two children in South Africa. They have to let them go around their children so that the cheetah is peaceful and does not attack. It seems that it is as any other pet cat or dog.
People have kept them as pets for a long time as a symbol of wealth, even today. The large cats are costly and not seen so much. In some places it is against the law to keep a pet cheetah like the United States of America,
but in different places like western Asia it is legal. Just because it is okay to own a cheetah in some places it does not mean that it is a great idea and is safe.
According to Dr. Laurie marker, a world class Cheetah expert, training Cheetahs are different than other wild cats because they are not afraid of People. They don't attack people unless you try to harm them because they eat gazelles, Zebras, and wild bulls. Ancient Egyptians often kept cheetahs as pets, and also tamed and trained them for hunting. They would take Cheetahs into hunting fields blindfolded while dogs would smell the prey. When the prey is near enough they would release the cheetah. This tradition was passed onto Persians and Indian princesses. Cheetah was associated with royalty and elegance. Akbar the ruler of Mughal empire kept around 1,000 cheetahs.
Cheetahs have, though, very specific needs. They need a lot of food and special supplements of vitamins A, D, and E. They need space up to acres of land so that it can move freely and is required regularly. Even if you properly train your cheetah do not domesticate as a dog or a cat. Domestication is a process that takes hundreds of generations of breeding. If you are thinking of adopting one, you might want to change the idea because they are still wild animals.
Fun fact:: What is the least trainable big cat?
Leopards, because leopards are the tree-dwelling animals that attack from above. They often spring from trees with a deadly pounce on their prey.
