Discovery School at Four Corners
June 2019 - Greenfield Public Schools
FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
As we rapidly approach the summer I'd like to share with families some general reminders to support summer learning and ensure a smooth transition back to school in the fall. Students' reading abilities can decline from the end of one school year to the beginning of the next school year. This is sometimes referred to as the summer slide. To prevent any reading loss it's important that children continue to read throughout the summer. We recommend 20 minutes of daily reading. This could be read aloud, family reading to the child, silent reading, etc. Consistent reading and learning over the summer can improve academic progress, provide opportunities for family engagement, and motivate young minds. Reading is really essential to a student's success. It's the building block to so many other subjects to include math, social studies, science, and specials.
In the next couple of weeks students will receive information on the Greenfield Public Library's Summer Reading Program. We'll also have another All School Read-Out Day the last week of school to launch our summer reading theme. If you have any questions regarding summer reading or you'd like some recommendations for your child, please do not hesitate to speak with our librarian Mrs. Eve, our reading teacher, Ms. Wood, or your child's classroom teacher.
I hope you and your family have a fun, relaxing, enriching, memorable, and safe summer!

END OF YEAR SURVEY
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/W6DMJP9
It's also available on our website, Facebook page, and Mr Toomey's Twitter feed. Our preference was that you complete it online rather than complete a paper copy only because someone must go in later and manually enter the results from the paper copies, but we will be happy to get as many completed surveys as we can. We anticipate it only takes 5 minutes to complete so we hope you can take the time. Thank you in advance.
SUMMER HOURS
This summer there will be no summer programming at DSFC. As such, the only people in the building throughout most of the summer will be Principal Toomey and our custodians. We recommend you call prior to stopping by the building for any reason to ensure someone is present. Mrs. Dostal will be back in the building in mid August. If you cannot get a hold of anyone at the school and your call is of a pressing nature, please contact the central office at 413-772-1300.

FROM THE PTO
PTO Presents:
In May our final PTO Presents guest for the school year was Circus of Imagination: Mime, Improvisation and Circus Performances. From balancing on a tightrope, to juggling and illusion, Linda’s performances spark the imagination and funny bone.
Fundraiser and event update:
The Produce and Flower sale was a success. Thank you for participating! Proceeds earned will fund the blacktop project.
The PTO organized a luncheon for teachers and staff on the half day before Memorial Day weekend to say thank you for all their hard work. By all reports, the lunch was yummy and provided much-needed time for connecting and catching up.
Next year’s PTO needs you:
Are you looking to get involved with the school? Joining the PTO is a great way to become a part of things and to help make some of the decisions that affect our kiddos’ day to day lives. We will be voting for next year’s members in our June 5th meeting, and we are starting conversations now. If you are interested, or know somebody who might be, please reach out to our email below, or through social media. We could really use your help, and we can find a way to make it work with busy schedules.
Thank you, as always, for being such a great community!

SCHOOL COUNCIL
We're excited to announce our newest School Council member for next year, kindergarten parent Natalie Feliciano. Natalie replaces Sarah Ahearn Bellemare who served on the Council for the last three years as a parent/ guardian representative. Thank you, Sarah, for volunteering to help our school in this capacity.
School Council is a (Department of Elementary and Secondary Education-mandated) group that meets regularly to discuss the School Improvement Plan, school climate, budget issues, and other relevant topics with the principal. The DSFC school Council has been a very productive group since its inception over four years ago that has significantly helped the principal and school.
Our School Council members for 2019-2020 are:
Jake Toomey - Principal
Natalie Feliciano - Parent/guardian rep
Pete Brown - Parent/guardian rep
Jessica Pollock - Parent/guardian rep
