News You Can Use 3rd Grade 2019-20
Mrs. Kincer's Happy Campers
January 20th
I hope you had a nice long weekend and enjoyed a Monday off! The Ireland teachers joined all of the other Dubois County teachers for a day of professional development today. During the morning session, we were inspired by Buddy Berry, Superintendent of Eminence, KY, and the leader of Schools on Fire.
This afternoon, we were given time to meet with all 3rd-grade teachers in the county to share ideas and strategies for maximizing student success in a variety of subject areas.
SNOWMAN POW
With this POW, I would request that you take a step back when revising and let's see what your child can do. This week we'll spend some time on specific ideas on how to revise. I'll share info with you, too - but let's see how they fare on their own. They still need at least 5 revisions - not spelling, capitals, or punctuation.
RILEY'S WEEK
Thank you to all who participated and contributed to help Riley Hospital better serve the children in our state.
SENSORY STATIONS
We've been learning about our brains and regulating our emotions during our Mindfulness lessons this year. It's fascinating, and we'd like to delve further into this by creating SENSORY STATIONS for each classroom. Here is a link if you can help us acquire some materials needed for this project. https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/3W0P2S4ZZFIHX?ref_=wl_share
NOTES FOR THIS WEEK
We're learning about the basic rights and freedoms our nation's Constitution and Bill of Rights grants us. We're also learning about civic duties and civil rights, which is perfect timing with Martin Luther King Jr. Day this week! We're having a test on Wednesday, January 22nd.
- Your child should be reading 15-20 minutes every night. Thanks for helping us to build our reading stamina!
- Be sure to ask what your child is reading in small groups, too.
ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS
This is Unit 4 Week 1 and a new newsletter came home on Friday for you.POW
Your student will bring home a POW about a snowman coming to life this Friday. This POW is due on Friday, Jan. 24th. Please read the prompt carefully as there is specific information to include in each section. Please let your child do his/her own revising - but have him/her find at least FIVE ways to make their writing more clear or more descriptive when revising.
MATH
Keep practicing those facts - we've had quite a few students move on to their 100-fact timed test! In February, all "little" timed tests (specific facts, doubles, mixed with only 20 problems) will be done at recess. We've been working on these for about four months now and feel that most students have had sufficient time to master these individual fact families.
We're working on problem-solving, multiplying by multiples of 10 and 100, patterning, and heading into data and graphs.
GENERAL NOTES
- Please sign the assignment notebook nightly. Asking to see your child's homework will go a long way toward helping make a stronger home-school connection.
- We use our Chromebooks and headphones or earbuds just about every day, so please make sure your child has earbuds or headphones.
- We love having a healthy snack for our mid-morning break. We also appreciate students having a water bottle at school - this helps keep them hydrated throughout the day.
- Our morning breakfast program continues to be very popular! Please remember that students who are dropped off in the car line should arrive by 7:40 if they plan to eat before the bell rings at 7:50.

Here is a look at our special class schedule. Please note that Gym and Library are both on Mondays. Please send your child in gym shoes and remind them to bring their library books. You can find more about our daily routines on our Third Grade Website!
