End of Quarter 1
As a reminder, the 1st quarter grading period ends today, Friday, October 9. Report cards will be available on Thursday, October 15. You can view your student’s report card by logging into Skyward Family Access, opening the portfolio section, and opening your PDF. This year is a bit different for us as we navigate Quarter 1 assessments.
- Quarter 1 represents skills or concepts that are introduced or marked at the introductory level. These concepts will be further developed over the course of the year.
- Any areas indicators left blank have not yet been assessed. These will be assessed in quarters 2, 3 and 4.
- The Learner Characteristics section of the report card represents personal work habits or social skills. We have not yet assessed most of these as students have been learning virtually for a portion of our first quarter.
- Science and social studies indicators are not marked for the first semester as our focus towards assessment from spring into this winter will be on reading, writing and math. Science and social studies concepts are certainly integrated into our core subject areas. However, the assessment of science and social studies will be noted in our second semester.
- Our related arts classes will be using a participation grading scale. This will be marked at the semester.
In addition, fall results of the NWEA will be sent to families electronically over fall break. As always, if you have questions about your child's progress, please speak with your child's teacher.
Car Rider Line
As anticipated, the car rider line is very long now that we have moved into Phase 3. We appreciate that the number of cars and car riding students takes time even with the efficient work of staff who are facilitating the process. Thank you to all parents who are patiently following procedures in the morning and afternoon.
As a school and district, we partner with the Fishers Police Department who frequently monitor traffic and building procedures during arrival and dismissal. We ask that families in cars do not park and walk to the door in an effort to bypass the car line. This delays the process for everyone. Again, it will simply take time to support the safe arrival and dismissal of all car riders. In order to keep procedures running efficiently, we respectfully request that families not park in the parking lot or on the street to walk to the front door. We do have some neighborhood families who choose to walk to school rather than drive, and this practice is fine.
Thank you for your understanding and support of the procedures to ensure the safety of everyone.

Counselor's Corner
Hi HPE families!
The state of Indiana requires every student to receive a bullying prevention lesson by October 15th each year. This year is no different! I have had the opportunity to teach students this very important lesson both asynchronously and synchronously. In my video or in the classroom, we talked about the difference between actual bullying and a conflict/problem/disagreement. Most things at school fall into the conflict/problem/disagreement category. As we continue this school year, we will learn how to problem solve conflicts/problems/disagreements. You can encourage your child to begin problem solving situations by using a strong, respectful voice to tell the other person how they feel or how the other person's action made them feel. We want our students to feel empowered to use their voices and let others know how they feel.

Hearing Screening Procedures in Phase III
For students learning in person:
Sometime before Fall Break, hearing screenings will be completed for Kindergarten, 1st, 4th, and any new students who move to the HSE school district. Students will receive a slip of paper to send home to families if they passed. If they fail the screening, the student will be re-screened in 2-3 weeks and a referral will be sent home at that time if hearing continues to be a concern. Feel free to contact the school's Speech Language Pathologist via email if you have any questions regarding your child’s hearing.
For students learning 100% virtually (kindergarten, 1st, 4th and new students to HPE:
If you are interested in having your child’s hearing screened please contact the speech language pathologist via email (tvanhorn@hse.k12.in.us) and a time before or after school will be arranged.
Safety Procedures:
Due to COVID-19, the Speech Language Pathologists will be following more strict procedures to ensure safety for all students and staff:
o enter their classroom to have them stay in their cohort
o have students stand vs. sit (no need to disinfect chairs)
o Speech Language Pathologist puts on headphones to decrease surface touching by students
o Put headphones on from the back to avoid exposure
o Sanitize headphones between each student

Bus riders during COVID
During the pandemic, the practice of allowing students to ride buses not normally assigned to them will be suspended due to capacity and contact tracing concerns. Any exception to this directive would need to be approved by Zach McKinney.
Coats for Kids
Does your child need a coat for this winter? Registration is open for Hamilton County Kids Coats. Follow the link below to make an appointment. The pickup for Fishers will be Saturday, Nov. 7th, from 9am-noon, at St. Louis de Montfort Catholic Church.
Virtual Enrichment Sessions
Curbside Continues for Virtual Learners
Virtual learners can use HSE Curbside service to borrow books from the library.
Full time virtual students will be able to place 4 books on hold weekly. On Wednesdays between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., I will be leaving out a book cart in the front vestibule. The curbside pick up book cart is organized by grade level. All book stacks will have a name tag to help you get the right one. You can just walk in, grab your book stack, and go. No need to sign in or check in. There will also be a book bin for you to return materials as you finish with them. Make sure to place your holds by noon on Tuesday to allow processing time. Happy reading!
