Thank you Volunteers!!!!
Marilyn's evening ELL B class wrote thank you notes to their volunteers, and here are few samples:
Dear Andrej,
I will never forget all the fun activities you include in your class to enhance learning. I especially love how you always relate the lesson to real-life examples that allow me to make logical sense of the material. You make it so much easier to recall the material when being tested. Thank you for volunteering to teach us English.
Sincerely,
Khamla Moua
Dear Jammin,
Thank you for helping our class. You are very important to us. Thank you for giving us your precious time. It is a beautiful work of charity. The peace you transmit is incredible.
Your charisma and patience say a lot about you. God bless you as you continue to give yourself to others.
Sincerely,
Janet Gloria
Dear Jammin,
Thank you for helping us. I really appreciate you giving us your precious time to teach us. Learning English is hard, but your work as a volunteer makes this process less difficult. You help the world to be a better place. Thanks again.
Sincerely,
Edson Costa
Thank you from Alison's ELL B class
Thank you Noreen, and thank you all Hubbs Volunteers!
Laura Temali's students interview their volunteers
Laura has volunteers help in her class every Wednesday, assisting with conversation, writing, and general small group practice. Many times, Laura, the teacher, has the volunteers ask students questions to generate conversation. This time, the students asked the volunteers questions and wrote about the volunteer they interviewed.
Here are a few samples from Laura's class:

Paul is a volunteer in our ELL C class every week. Paul is a volunteer that helps us in the school. I interviewed him about his life. He was born in Chicago, but he grew up in many cities because his parents wanted to move for different reasons. It was hard for him to move all the time because he lost friends. He has three brothers, one is older and two younger. He had a lot of beautiful memories from when he was young. Every summer he visited his grandparents in Nebraska. He was able to ride horses and also he liked fishing. After he finished high school he decided to go to the University of Missouri to study History and English. When he finished at the University of Missouri, he went to the University of Minnesota to study city planning. He also went to Harvard University in Boston. The best part of his career was making a difference in people's lives. He is married to his wife Ann and they have three childrens. He has two sons and one daughter. Also he said he likes to volunteer at the Hubbs Center.

Susan Nelson is a volunteer in our ELL C class every week. She grew up in North Dakota which is next to Minnesota. She had two sisters and one brother. A memory she has is going swimming in the pool with her friends. She went to university at the College of St. Catherines. She had a job named O.T. which is occupational therapy. She worked with children. The best part of her career was meeting her daughter. She has two children, one daughter and one son. She volunteers at the Hubbs Center because she likes to help people learn to communicate. In the next few years she wants to travel more.

Karen is a volunteer in our ELL C class every week. She grew up in Saint Paul MN. She has four siblings, two brothers and two sisters. Karen was the first child in her family. The one childhood memory she has is when her sister was born. Karen went to the University of Minnesota where she went to medical school. She worked in the hospital until she retired. Karen’s best part of her career was helping others and meeting different people. Karen and her husband have three children, two boys, one girl, and one granddaughter. Her daughter and granddaughter live with them. Their son and his fiancee live in Minnesota. When she retired she wanted to work as a volunteer and her friend told her that Hubbs Center needs volunteers, so she likes it here. The one thing Karen wants to do in the next few years with her husband, who will retire soon, is to travel to many places.

Staff Profile: Laurie Stramer
Laurie Stramer is an Educational Assistant, and has been working for the St. Paul Schools for 25 years. Before her current job, she worked in both the computer lab and as a teacher’s aide. Laurie was working a different job before she got relocated to Hubbs where she is currently very happy with her job. She takes a lot of joy in meeting all the students at Hubbs and being able to help them wherever she can.
A typical day for Laurie looks like: logging into her computer, then right away helping students by making sure everything in registration is correct. Then, she partakes in some paperwork and quality control, as well as filing. While all of these tasks are going on, she also looks for students' needs and helps them when she can. Whether its helping them register, filing accommodations, or anything else, Laurie is there to assist.
Outside of her job at Hubbs, Laurie enjoys spending time with her family. She loves having her big family over to partake in fun outside activities: bonfires, swimming in her pool, hosting BBQ's and more. She especially loves spending time with her nine grandchildren who all love to come over and play!
