Hello Bobcat Families! Spring is in the air and we have a LOT going on at New Lebanon School in the upcoming weeks. Please remember school doors open at 8:00am and it is essential students arrive on time to begin their day positively and proactively. SBA continues for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade, so please be sure to get a good night's sleep and eat a healthy breakfast (which you can get at school every day for free!). Have a great weekend - important updates below...
The SBA (Smarter Balanced Assessment - CT state test) CONTINUES next week for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders Please read the important note below, so you and your student are prepared to do your very bes!t
We strive to ensure that your child—and all Greenwich Public School students—receive an education that prepares them to thrive in a global economy and in civic life. That’s why Connecticut has adopted challenging academic standards, including the Connecticut Core Standards in mathematics and language arts, as well as the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). We expect that all our students will attain a firm grounding in mathematics, language arts, and science by the time they graduate from high school, preparing them to succeed in the future. Our teachers and administrators are committed to working together to support students with excellent instruction and resources to meet these new expectations.
With these statewide learning goals, Connecticut needs ways to measure student progress. Assessments are like academic checkups; they help teachers and parents see where students are, compared with where they need to be. The results can reveal subject areas where a student is excelling and subject areas where a student needs extra help. The state requires assessments in the subject areas of english language arts and mathematics using the Smarter Balanced Assessment at the elementary and middle school levels, and in Grade 11 using the SAT, which can also be used as a college entrance exam. The state also requires assessments in science in Grades 5, 8, and 11, using the NGSS Assessments.
The Smarter Balanced Assessments and NGSS (Science) Assessments will take place on:
3rd Grade: May 10th and May 11th (ELA), May 17th, 18th, 19th, & 20th (Math)
4th Grade: May 10th and May 11th (ELA), May 17th, 18th, 19th, & 20th (Math)
5th Grade: May 3rd and 4th (NGSS/Science), May 10th and May 11th (ELA), May 17th, 18th, 19th, & 20th (Math)
Makeup testing will occur as needed for individual students.
The Smarter Balanced and NGSS Assessments are both administered on digital devices. These assessments are designed to measure skills in reading comprehension, writing, mathematics, and real-world science using questions that require students to demonstrate that they truly understand the content. In all these statewide assessments, additional supports are available for students with special needs, as determined by an individualized education program (IEP) or 504 Plan.

Principal, New Lebanon School
Class Baskets are officially ready!!!!
Raffle tickets will be sent home with students this week so be sure to check your child's backpack. Families will have the opportunity to buy/sell raffle tickets and the drawing will take place at the Spring Dinner on Saturday, May 21 (rain date 5/22).
How the Raffle Tickets Work:
We ask that all families bring sold/unsold tickets with them to the Spring Dinner where the drawing will take place. If you do not plan to attend the Spring Dinner, families can still buy/sell tickets to be entered into the raffle. Any sold ticket stubs and payment must be returned to school to be submitted before the event - PTA will arrange to pick up.
Aside from our Class Baskets, there will be many more prizes that will be raffled off at the Spring Dinner!
May 23rd and Mat 24th - Book Fair Open to Families!
Friday, MAy 27th is Pajama day to Benefit Ukraine!
Bella (11th), Tessa (11th), Siena (10th), and Lia Woodring (7th), of Greenwich Public Schools, have this to share...
My sisters and I, who attend Greenwich Public Schools, are starting a fundraiser "Kids Caring for Kids" to raise money for children impacted by the war in Ukraine. Specifically, we are working with an organization called The Comfort Kit Initiative. Comfort Kits are an intervention used for the initial care of children who have been traumatized. The money raised will be used to create kits for children in Ukraine and those in refugee camps in Poland.
Comfort Kits have been used for decades with children worldwide (in Haiti, Laos, Thailand, and elsewhere). They were initially created and used in a children's hospital Oncology Department. The kits contain a collection of simple items that help children regulate their feelings and be calm during chaotic times. Each kit has instructions for the child and/or caregiver to guide them. Some examples are bubbles to learn belly breathing, notebooks to practice drawing/writing feelings and thoughts, squishy balls to release tension and more.
We think this is so important for Greenwich students because they can learn they can help other children, no matter how far away they are. We realize there have been many fundraisers for the war but we want to focus on the children and their psychological needs. Also, the strategies in these kits can be used by all kids during stressful times. We can provide you with a sample kit if you would like to show/teach your students.
We would like to ask for your help with our goal!
5th Grade Graduation is almost HERE!
AAPI Heritage Month
Did you know that May is Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month? According to the Greenwich Time, quoting Census data, residents who identify as Asian American make up about 7% of the town’s 63,518 residents. Please let the communications department know if you have any planned events or special lessons focused on AAPI Heritage Month in order for us to pass along to some of our local media for positive publicity. One parent reached out to us and asked: “To help [her family] and other AAPI students feel visible and included in the GPS community, could we do something to celebrate AAPI Heritage Month in May?”
