We Are Called
Oct. 8, 2021
From Mrs. Rhodes
The parish that I grew up at in Iowa celebrated its 150 centennial a couple of years back. About the same time, my family was "sent" from Prince of Peace Parish (where we had been parishioners for 20+ years) to open a new parish, St. John Paul II in Olathe. The 150th celebration made me realize what people sacrificed to build the parish I enjoyed growing up as I was being asked to give.
Now, they have decided to close the parish I grew up in. My dad is heartbroken. I had a glimpse of his heart break when I was asked to leave Prince of Peace. 20 of the 22 years we were married were there celebrating big things- my husband joined the church, my kids received their Sacraments, they graduated from the school, played many sports, and so much more there. Dad supported the parish with his time, talent and treasure, but he had a great love for Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. He had been a parishioner for his entire life and even met my mom nearly 60 years earlier at a chicken dinner!
I am excited that things are coming back to SHOJ parish. I recently gave a tour to some folks and just love talking to families about what our parish offers. I encourage them to get involved and support our parish however they can. We are blessed to have a vibrant parish that supports Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic School so well.
When explaining tuition to families, I share with them that our parish supports nearly 40% of our school budget. I know that some of us are just returning to things that used to be routine (especially Mass - you don't need to sign up or anything), but wanted to remind our school families to support the parish as well with time, talent and treasure. Tuition only covers 60% of the actual cost of educating one child at SHOJ. There are ministry fairs these next few weekends to help you find ways to get involved.

Vision screenings were completed this week. No news is good news - if you didn't get an email from me, all is well.
There are zero covid cases for the 4th week in a row! We continue to have our rapid covid testing supplies available to test students who have had an exposure but are not having any symptoms, so they can avoid quarantine at home. Please continue to make smart decisions in regard to keeping our school safe and healthy, such as frequent handwashing, keeping sick children at home and all of the other mitigation strategies that help prevent the spread of contagious illnesses.
Please make sure your child (ren) have a water bottle EVERY single day. I am having a large amount of kids each day come in, sometimes not until the afternoon, asking for water. It is vital to every body function to be drinking water throughout the day and can be dangerous in high temperatures and dry air if they are not getting enough fluids.
Another important topic I would like to discuss is medication administration at school. I have several OTC medications in my office that I can administer to students whose parents have consented. Those medications include: ibuprofen (liquid and tablets), acetaminophen (liquid and tablets), oral antihistamine (liquid), TUMS chewables, triple antibiotic ointment and hydrocortisone 1% cream. All other OTC medications will need to be given before or after school. If there are extenuating circumstances about an OTC medication needing to be given while at school that I don’t have, please contact me first to discuss before sending anything with your child. If your child needs to be given a prescription medication at school daily or as needed, I MUST have a labeled medicine bottle or box with the child’s name, the medication, the dose and the time it is to be given. I will not administer an unlabeled prescription medication to a student under any circumstance. Additionally, please email attendance@shoj.org or mary.hungerford@shoj.org if your child (ren) will be tardy, absent or leaving early.
Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help or if you have questions.
