Collecting Books for Babies
As one of our Community Projects, Fox Valley Reading Council is collecting and donating new children’s Books for Babies to Northwestern Medicine /Delnor Hospital in Geneva, and Rush Copley Medical Center in Aurora. The books provide families of newborns in the hospital or NICU, with a NEW children’s book appropriate for newborns. Reading to babies is soothing, creates bonding, and provides that special first literacy experience. We believe this is a very worthwhile community project!
To donate, join us at our events, or contact us: illinoisfvrc@gmail.com or Bobette Dodson @ 630.431.1785

The Global Pencil Project
A SIMPLE IDEA
The promise of a pencil.
It was a photo of a young boy in Africa gripping a worn, broken pencil that tugged at Maria Vick’s heart. That pencil was a basic necessity not often available, she realized, a tiny tool that represented both his opportunity to learn and his ability–quite literally–to make a mark on the world. It also held the promise there was at least one thing that was solely his. So from her kitchen table Maria launched an initiative to get pencils into the hands of impoverished children everywhere.
Today her simple idea has grown into a 501(c)(3) serving children in the United States and nations around the world.
BIG IMPACT
The point of a pencil.
It’s also education’s most basic tool. Give a child a pencil and the fact is you’ve made a good start on the eradication of poverty. According to the Global Partnership for Education, 250 million children around the world fail to reach Grade 4 or reach it without learning to read or write.
With the help of donors across the country we’ve already placed 5 million pencils (and other educational materials) in the hands of children who might otherwise do without. Nearly half of these are in the United States, with the balance in Africa, India and elsewhere.
YOU CAN HELP
Make your mark.
It’s so simple to help. We match needy schools with individuals, families, school groups, churches and community groups who collect pencils, package them and then ship them directly to the recipients.
Donor groups also cover the cost of shipping; we’re happy to offer suggestions for ways raise this money, such as asking for a $1 donation in addition to a pack of pencils. Or check with local businesses in your area. Many may be happy to sponsor this cost.If you are a school or orphanage in need of pencils, please send us your school/organization name, address, contact person and an estimated number of students. We will be happy to connect you with a group that is eager to help you.
To donate simply bring pencils to our events this year or money to help with shipping and purchasing pencils. Contact us @ illinoisfvrc@gmail.com. We are always looking for volunteers to help with our community projects.
