Magnet Update

UN Council Kickoff

Hogwarts has houses; Wiley has UN Councils! UN Council meetings mix all students across grade levels, inviting small, collaborative groups to focus on global citizenship. This year we have 26 UN Councils gathering monthly and building strong communities.

On Friday, October 5th, UN Councils kicked off with an International Dot Day celebration. Students connected with each other and focused on the power of words using Peter H. Reynolds, The Word Collector. Students chose a word that spoke to them, whether it represents who they want to be this year or maybe just a word that sparked their curiosities.

Wiley Spirit Week

Thank you to all who participated in our abbreviated Fall 2018 Spirit Week! Hurricane Michael tried to derail our plans, but I'm happy to report that we were still able to donate 210 lbs of vegetables to the food pantry. We were also able to have an AMAZING Japanese-themed fall festival! A huge thank you to the PTA and to all those who made it a great success. It was a wonderful night celebrating our Wiley community!

Global Read Aloud

Pernille Ripp created the Global Read Aloud (GRA) in 2010 with a simple goal in mind; ONE BOOK TO CONNECT THE WORLD. From its humble beginnings, the GRA has grown to make a truly global connection with more than 1,000,000 students having participated.

The premise is simple; during a 6-week period, classes are reading their books and making global connections. Tools such as Skype, Twitter, Google Classrooms, Padlet and Google VR allow classrooms around the world to collaborate. Educators and students are able to continue these connections through the year.

Partnership with Participate

This school year marks our second year of collaborating with Participate, formerly known as VIF International Education. Participate strives to empower educators to create innovative, open learning environments that encourage curiosity. Learners with cultural awareness, creative thinking and problem-solving skills will be equipped to thrive in an increasingly global marketplace.

At Wiley, the Asia Society's Global Competency Matrix provides the framework for our learning:

  • Investigate the world
  • Recognize & weigh perspectives
  • Communicate Ideas
  • Take Action

Participate provides our staff with research-based global professional development (PD) modules. Teachers are using Participate's Global Citizenship Framework to learn more about global competencies. As a school community, we are studying the attitudes, skill-sets and knowledge needed to be responsible, respectful citizens within our interconnected world.
