Bike to School Day - Wednesday, May 5th
Calling all Glennwood Eagles! Whether you’re in person or virtual get out your bikes and dust off your helmets. Here at Glennwood, we are celebrating Air Quality Awareness Week - May 3-7, and will be working on one way that we can improve the environment around our school. So, let’s ride a bike or walk and encourage drivers to reduce idling in the school car-rider line. Let’s put all of those great Earth Day discussions from last week into practice! Students can choose to ride a bike, scoot or walk to school on Wednesday, May 5th if they are in person. And, virtual students can take advantage of our asynchronous afternoon to get out and ride their bikes or take a walk around the neighborhood! Let’s show everyone how Glennwood Eagles can SOAR to take care of the environment!
This week in classes, I began teaching the second lesson of a unit on our EL Education Habits of Scholarship. We followed up our lesson last week on Collaboration with a lesson on Perseverance. Students learned that perseverance means that we keep trying even when things get hard. If our first attempts don't work, we can try new strategies. Most importantly, we don't give up. We discussed historical examples of famous people who experienced great hardship yet never gave up to succeed in their goals. This is something that parents and teachers can reinforce when they come across examples from history of those who struggled in their lives yet kept persevering. Students learned that we can show perseverance by working hard, not giving up when things get hard, showing dedication and commitment, being patient, and trying again and again until we feel good about meeting our goal. Students were able to make the link between what we learned previously about collaboration and being able to stick with something to reach a desired goal or destination. We finished the lesson by playing a Perseverance Jeopardy game with the students. Next week, I will conclude the EL Education Habits of Scholarship unit with a lesson on Craftsmanship.
It is hard to believe that this school year is almost over! Here are just a few reminders. Face masks are required to be worn in school. The kids are doing amazingly well keeping them on during the school day. Please make sure your child’s mask fits well by covering both the nose and chin and does not have gaps on the sides. Also, please put 2-3 extra masks in their backpacks so if their face mask becomes dirty, they can change into a clean one.
Kids sometimes have accidents while at school. Please send some extra clothes for your child so if their clothes become soiled they have something to wear. We do have some extra clothing just in case, but our supply is getting low. If you are cleaning clothes out over the coming weeks and have some extra clothes you could donate, we will happily take them. We are most in need of bottoms for girls (all sizes for 5 to 8-year-olds), but could always use any clothing.
CSD is excited to now offer Covid antigen testing to symptomatic students and staff. Consent for students can be accessed in the parent portal in Infinite Campus. These tests can be used on any student or staff that becomes symptomatic during the school day. Here is a link to more information and FAQs: https://www.csdecatur.net/covidtesting
If you have any questions, please contact Nurse Beth at ebarrington@csdecatur.net or 404-370-4435.

Save the Date for Java Joy!
Save The Date. Local real estate, government affairs, and business law firm, Williams Teusink, is sponsoring a Java Joy mobile coffee cart for our outstanding Glennwood teachers on Friday, May 28th from 7:00-8:30 AM near the carpool turn around. Teachers come and get your caffeine and a little joy from one of the company's Joyristas! Java Joy is a non-profit mobile coffee cart run by adults with disabilities. They will be serving hot and iced CounterCulture coffee and hot chocolate.
Not a teacher, don't worry! The Joyristas from Java Joy will be spreading additional joy to our Glennwood community on Saturday, May 29 from 8:30-10:00 AM. If you are headed out of town for the holiday weekend, drop by the front of the school near the marquis sign for a cup of delicious coffee. To participate, you will need to pre-order your coffee and snacks from Java Joy Neighborhood Orders. We need to reserve at least 25 cups by 7:00 PM on 5/28.

Step Up for Teachers!
It's that time of year again -- time to Step Up for Teachers! And what a year it's been. Show your favorite teacher just how much you appreciate their hard work during this unprecedented school year with a loving tribute. Just go to www.stepupforteachers.com make a $25 donation and leave your tribute. We'll notify the honored teacher or CSD staff member and deliver a "We Step Up for Teachers" yard sign to your door in the coming weeks. The Step Up campaign supports our teachers in the classroom through Teacher Innovation Grants. Let's show them some love! Together, we make a difference for #ourschools, #ourteachers, and #ourkids. As a special gift from DEF to our DHS seniors, we are giving every member of the senior class of 2021 a “Congratulations Class of 2021” yard sign. It’s a little something to brighten a lackluster final year of high school. Details about sign pick-up are coming soon.
