Celebrating Black History Month- Guardian Angel Shrine
"African American architect Paul Revere Williams was orphaned at the age of 4 in 1898 and placed in foster care with his older brother. In 1937 he wrote an essay for American Magazine, in which he said: “I came to realize that I was being condemned, not by lack of ability, but by my color. Eventually, however, as I grew older and thought more clearly, I found in my condition an incentive to personal accomplishment, and inspiring challenge.”
Paul was a prolific designer of homes and commercial buildings, but he also designed churches of all dominations, and one of his most stunning designs must be that of the Guardian Angel Cathedral or Guardian Angel Shrine as it was named when constructed.
At the end of the 1950s there was a request to hold Sunday Mass at 4.30am in order to let the night shift casino workers, entertainers, and musicians attend before going home. These were carried primarily at the Royal Hotel and Casino, but became increasingly impractical. In 1961 land was donated near the Desert Inn Hotel and Casino to build a church for Strip workers and tourists and so the Guardian Angel Shrine opened in 1963. Its design is unique and dramatic, with multiple A-frames making it stand out among the surrounding buildings – as it still does today.
Here are some rarely seen photos and postcards of the church, both before and after the artwork was completed, which happened later in the 1970s."
