Texan Time
Starting Friday, January 27, our students will engage in Texan Time. During the last 50 minutes of the day, students will participate in enrichment and extension classes in an effort to foster the GCISD 5 with a focus on creating an original design or product. Classes will be offered in the areas of fine arts, creativity, and innovation. This past Friday, our Texans viewed advertisements regarding the courses and selected their top three course choices with their homeroom teachers. Click here to see the slideshow of all of the advertisements. Please note, classes were offered to specific grade-levels, the slide show contains all classes offered at BES.
Students will be informed of their courses later this week. Also later this week, we will send out an email with a call for supplies to make our courses work. For example, one class is making art out of plastic bottle caps like those found on soda bottles. Start saving those caps. A more detailed list will be emailed to all families this week.
We are exited to offer our students Texan Time on Friday afternoons as we continue to build an excellent school together!

Grant Opportunity
Dr. Jesse Schroeder of Schroeder Orthodontics, one of the GCISD Education Foundation’s official corporate sponsors and supporter of many schools, is proud to announce a Teacher’s Grant Contest. For the fourth year, he will be sponsoring five $1,000 grants as part of his five year $100,000 commitment to the Education Foundation and our school district. The grant will be given to a teacher in each grade, first-fifth. These are the key points to enter:
- Have your Texan write or draw a one-page idea of what he/she thinks the teacher could do for the students with the $1,000 grant.
- Students submit drawing or writing to their teachers by February 2, 2017.
- The teacher is to select the one that he/she thinks best expresses a good use of the grant; the selections will be submitted to the Education Foundation Office on Friday, February 3, 2017.
- The Education Foundation will deliver the submissions to Schroeder Orthodontics for selection of the five winners.
- The winners will be announced with check presentations to the teachers at the annual GCISD Council of PTAs Founder’s Day luncheon and program, Thursday, February 23.
There are no rules as to how the one-page drawing or writing should be done so be creative! Please make sure that your students have their name, grade, teacher’s name and school’s name on the submission.
Art Contest
GCISD students of all ages are invited to create artwork illustrating the fun learning opportunities available through GCISD’s Summer Enrichment Program. This year’s theme is “Rockin' Through the Summer.” The winning artwork will serve as the cover design for the GCISD Summer Enrichment brochure, which will be posted on the website and provides information about registration and summer learning opportunities for students completing K-6th grades. Winning artwork will also be used to promote the Summer Enrichment Program through social media. The student who creates the winning entry will be recognized in the brochure and during a regular meeting of the GCISD Board of Trustees.
Art must be original and can be hand-drawn, painted, computer-designed or in any other medium. Judges will be looking for a design that is creative, appropriate and uses the “Rockin' Through the Summer” theme. Art should be on 8 ½” x 11” paper and submitted in color, but be able to be reproduced in black and white. Student's full name, school, grade and teacher's name should be on the BACK of the artwork. Please do not frame or mat entry to any size larger than 8 ½” x 11”. Our contest opened January 9, 2017, and the deadline for submitting the art is Friday, February 10th. Students should submit entries to their campus art teacher.
