Leah Aragon Swimmer of the Month

Leah has kicked off her year with meeting those New Years Resolutions! She started swimming with our new evening workout group at Westside on Monday and Wednesday evenings and she does dryland training with Coach Gene at Intensity Strength and Conditioning several times a week. Leah has set some goals to enter several competitions this year and is sticking to it. Her first competition was the USMS One Hour Swim. She looked strong and steady throughout the whole event due to her determination. She has plans to compete at several meets this spring including USMS Spring Nationals. Leah never misses a workout and is always there with a smile to push herself to work hard in the pool but to also greet and support new swimmers. She is a regular face on deck as a United States Swimming Official and volunteer to age group and high school swimming. Leah is a physcian for the Center for Adult and Family Medicine Bon Secours Medical Group. She is married to husband Rico, also a physician. She has raised two swimmers of her own, daughter Nina and son Miko. (Nina is in college also studying to become a Dr. and Miko is a high school senior this year) Leah is originally from the Phillipines.

24 Swimmers Rock the USMS One Hour Swim!

We had a great turnout for the USMS One Hour ePostal Championship. The following swimmers participated: Ruth Albright, Leah Aragon, Janet Cardenas, Jennifer Cranny, Fran Durovchic, Kacky Elliott, Rick Gantt, David Hall,Todd Hermetz, Mark Kothe, David Krysh, Janice Hebel, Steven Heller, Jim Malone, Lee Mathis, Carolyn Moore, Stephanie Nagele, Kristi Panayotoff, Jane Polk, Cheryl Quinn, Mark Sharp, Stacy Sargent and Jose Villa, It was our first year to host this event and it looks like an event well worth continuing. Kudos to our swimmers for working hard to maintain their pace for the whole hour with no stopping. We had a few MVP's with over 4,500 yards: Stephanie, David and Jennifer. Our oldest swimmer Kacky completed 2,675 yards. Beginner swimmer Jose did 2,100 yards. Most of our swimmers swam more yards than they thought they would! It was fun to see everyone exceed their expectations and set some new bench marks.

Upstate Splash Video

Thanks so much to Martin Healy for making a video of our event last year. Greenville Splash will be hosting the Upstate Splash Charity Open Water Swim again in 2016. Make plans now to get involved this year to help our community.

Stroke Tip: Pull Buoy

Pull buoys have many uses that are beneficial. They are used to help swimmers work on balance, upper body and arm stroke. They eliminate kicking so it helps the swimmer to focus on their arms and on breathing. To use a pull buoy, place the buoy between your thighs. The buoy with the smaller side points to the bottom. Pull buoys allow swimmers to get a better sense of balance, the legs stay closer to the top of the water, make sure to point your toes with a buoy on. Pull buoys can be great for beginners because they let the swimmer work on the pull technique without getting so tired from the kick. Concentrate on fine tuning your arm stroke with the buoy and build good swim habits. Be careful not to use the buoy for more than 25 percent of your workout.
