Odd One Out
Grades K-12
Big Idea
This promotes Growth Mindset because it gets students thinking critically in a safe environment. There is no wrong answer to Odd One Out; students have to explain their reasoning/thinking.
Odd One Out Directions
Teacher displays four items, numbered 1-4 corresponding to student numbers 1-4. One item does not belong in the set based on a specific attribute.
2) The student says either I'M OUT or I FIT and the reason why.
3) Teammates do a Round Robin showing and sharing their thinking.
4) Team reaches a consensus on the Odd One Out.
5) Teacher reveals the answer and explains the rule.
6) Teams check answer and celebrate.
When to Use
This can be used as a bell starter to promote student thinking on a topic, or as an end of class activity to wrap up. This can also be used for team building purposes not necessarily based on your curriculum (at the beginning of the year, for example).
Strategy Variation
Rather than numbering the items and students, table groups can work together to determine which item doesn't belong and share their reasoning with the class. This would promote team work and collaboration as a growth mindset.
