Mariner Memo
February 13, 2020
This Week at Marine City Middle School...
I hope that this special Thursday edition of the Mariner Memo finds everyone well and beginning that resting feeling as we take a long weekend to celebrate our mid-winter break. Just a reminder that the school will be closed Friday, February 14th through Monday, February 17th. We look forward to seeing everyone back to school on Tuesday, February 18th.
Though we had a short week of school, we have had a fun and packed schedule as we celebrated Wellness Week leading into this weekend, the ECSD Wellness Weekend (more below). We also recognized our Honor Roll and Magnificent Mariner students for quarter 2, and had a Positivity Project assembly on Thursday! Wow, were we ever rolling this week!
We have a lot of great information in this newsletter, but before we jump into that, a quick note to everyone. It probably comes as no surprise to anyone that it has been a particularly difficult cold and flu season. Here at MCMS, we have been hit particularly hard. One way that has played out has been in our use of tissue for our students. As of this morning (Thursday) we have used 814 boxes of tissues since the start of September!!! If you happen to have a box or two hanging around the house and could spare them, we would certainly appreciate it here for our runny noses. Thanks for your consideration.
Please continue reading on in this edition of the Mariner Memo for information about our Wellness Week and Weekend, Magnificent Mariner recipients, Science Olympiad news, and our P2 progress and Student of the Week winner.
Have a safe, warm, and restful four-day weekend,
-Mr. Ming

Wellness Week and Weekend at MCMS
Here at Marine City Middle School we extended the weekend into our school week by incorporating wellness facts into each school day this week as well as a small activity each day that focused on either the wellness of the body, mind, or soul.
Monday: 10-minutes of exercise activities
- Always look on the bright side: being an optimist can help you live longer.Studies have found that optimism is beneficial to your overall health, but is linked to a healthy heart and can even help ward off diseases. Optimists often have lower blood pressure, which reduces the risk of coronary artery disease as found in a study by scientists at Harvard and Boston Universities. People who are more optimistic also tend to have healthier behaviors – such as diet and exercise – that contribute to longevity.
Tuesday: Mindfulness Activity on Focused Listening to Others
- Traditional thinking has stated that you should exercise 5 times per week. New research, however, shows exercising that just twice a week reduces your chance of dying from cardiovascular disease by 41% and cancer by 18%, and those percentages didn’t increase with the incorporation of more sweat sessions. What’s more, another study proved light exercise—getting up for a stroll in the park, for example—bolstered mood and reduced depression more than medium or high intensity workouts. Wednesday: 10-minute exercise OR breathing and posture
- Feeling stressed? Read. Getting lost in a book can lower levels of cortisol, or other unhealthy stress hormones, by 67 percent.
- Walking outside – or spending time in green space – can reduce negative thoughts and boost self-esteem.
Thursday: Wellness Walk
- Circadian rhythms are physical, mental, and behavioral changes that follow a daily cycle. They respond primarily to light and darkness in an organism's environment. Sleeping at night and being awake during the day is an example of a light-related circadian rhythm. The blue light in phones can mess with your circadian rhythm. Exposure to any form of light suppresses the secretion of melatonin (a hormone that encourages the circadian rhythm), but blue light is especially powerful.
A Huge Mariner Thank You goes out to Neiman's Family Market in St. Clair for donating over 200 apples for the Wellness Walk!

This Week in the Positivity Project...
On Thursday of this week we also celebrated the P2 learning for January and February with our P2 assembly. Students from each grade were selected as exemplars for each of the character strengths learned about thus far in calendar year 2020: OPTIMISM, PRUDENCE, PERSEVERANCE, FORGIVENESS, and LOVE. These students were recognized for their commitment to strengthening these traits and were given a P2 shirt for their efforts. They were also invited to join in the fun with our Student-Council designed and run character strength assembly game centered on LOVE. For this game, grade level teams competed against each other to accurately identify the love song being played.
Congratulations to all of the fine students listed below who were recognized for their incredible show of P2 character strengths!!!
