The Third Grade Team

Learning Targets

A Learning Target is the desired goal of each task in which your child will actively be involved. In addition, it engages your child in reflective evaluation of their own performance.

Writers Workshop:

We will discuss the different categories of writing goals so that we can understand what we can do to improve as writers. I'll know I have it when I can select a goal for my beginning of year writing piece based on teacher, peer, and self feedback.

Readers Workshop:

We will discuss the structure of book clubs so that we can understand our purpose and role in the club. I'll know I have it when I can work with my book club members to practice sequencing and summarizing information in our fiction text.

Social Studies:

We will learn what makes a community and how they are formed so that we can understand how communities function. I'll know I have it when I can explain the characteristics of the three types of communities and identify which type I live in.

Math Workshop:

We will take the module 2 checkup so that we can demonstrate our knowledge of addition, subtraction, and three-dimensional figures. *Module 2 check-up summative assessment will be given on Wednesday*

We will create a matter comic so that I can show my understanding of matter and how it can change. I'll know I have it when my comic accurately shows the 3 forms of matter and what can cause matter to change forms.

Speeding to Read

This year Beck has been invited to participate in Texas Motor Speedway's SPEEDING TO READ program. We will be competing against 7 other schools in the area to see who can read the most books!! There will be 4 "turns," around the racetrack, or checkpoints in which student totals will be calculated and prizes/medals will be distributed to students who are in the lead. The first turn ends October 22nd and 3rd grade students need to have earned at least 6 "stickers" to meet their turn 1 goal.

For more information about the program, please visit the website at http://www.speedingtoread.com/

Using the log in their take-home folder, students can record the books they have finished reading. Any book read at home or in class counts towards meeting their goal! Please make sure that your child records the title of the book in the correct category (picture book, chapter book, graphic novel, or NASCAR book). Categorizing these books helps us to calculate how many "stickers" your child will earn for our tracking chart at school.

Please contact your child's language arts teacher if you have any questions about this program!
