A Message from Mr. Leonard

Dear Sun Path Families,

The first day of school is just around the corner. I am looking forward to having our fantastic students back in the building. Our staff have been working hard the last few weeks so your child will have a positive experience at Sun Path.

In this newsletter and the Sun Path Information flyer (given out at Connect and Assess) there is a lot of information for this coming school year. Please take some time to review both of these. Some things have changed from last year.

During the past few years, the government has provided lunch and breakfast free of charge to all students. This year, Kindergarten will continue to receive free breakfast but will pay for lunch. Students in Grades 1-5 will need to pay for both breakfast and lunch, unless families apply and qualify for Free/Reduced meals. I encourage everyone to apply for Free/Reduced meals. By filling out this form, it not only supports students with their meals at school, but it also brings in extra funding for the school and district. Teachers will have the Free/Reduced forms at Connect & Assess or you can find it online using the Shakopee Schools website.

Students will be eating both breakfast and lunch in the cafeteria. Parents are welcomed to occasionally come in and eat lunch with their child. We ask that if you are planning to eat lunch with your child, you call the office in the morning and let us know. Only your child can eat with you. We have a designated location in the cafeteria for you to eat lunch with your student.

We are also welcoming back volunteers this year. More information will be coming out in the coming weeks.

Please remember that students should not be dropped off before 8:55 in the morning. We did make one change to our dismissal procedures for this coming school year. All families picking up their child by car, will have to get in line and stay in their car. For safety reasons, we are no longer allowing people to park and cross through the pick-up line to get heir child. More information can be found later in this newsletter.

The first day of school is one of my favorite days of the year!

See you soon,

Patrick Leonard

Message from PTO

The Sun Path PTO welcomes all families to join us! We enrich the students' experience by planning fun events, providing extra equipment and supplies, and supporting teachers. This year, watch for bingo night, movie nights, the spring dance, and an end-of-year celebration. The Fun Run, our biggest fundraiser, will take place in October. We rely solely on parent volunteers and we are always looking for new ideas. Like us on Facebook for updates. We meet at 7 pm on the second Tuesday of each month in the Sun Path cafeteria. Save the date for our first meeting on Sept. 13. See you there!

Proud To Be A PBIS School

Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS) is a school-wide research-based framework for teaching and supporting positive behaviors for all students. PBIS promotes expected behaviors by teaching, modeling, practicing, intervening and positively acknowledging students for displaying appropriate behaviors. If your child is displaying positive behaviors at school or on the bus (respectful, responsible, positive and safe), they can earn a Saber Slip. These tickets are tied to individual and grade-level rewards each month. Throughout the year, there will be updates in the newsletter on PBIS happenings at school. You can also ask your child to tell you all about "Being a Saber!"

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION

For over 20 years, Box Tops for Education has given families an easy way to earn cash for their school, with products they already buy.

In the past, you would cut the little "Box Top" (see image to the side) off and bring them into school. We are asking if you have any of these still trickling around at home please send them with your child to school. They have phased this way out.

If you buy a product that has the "Box Tops" logo on it, now you can simply scan your store receipt with the Box Tops mobile app to identify participating products and instantly add cash to your school's earnings online.

DROP OFF AND PICK UP REMINDERS

Bus Riders

  • Students who ride the bus will be dropped off and picked up on the lower-level.
  • In the morning they depart from the bus and proceed to breakfast or the classroom.

Car Riders

Morning

  • If you are dropping your child off in the morning before 9:05 AM, please drop them off on the lower-level. Please drop the students off before the service door driveway. Parking in front of the lower-level main door is reserved for busses.
  • When dropping your child off, please pull up to the curb and have your child exit the car door (passenger’s side) next to the curb. We are trying to eliminate students in the parking lot, unless they are walking with their parent. If you choose to park and walk your child to the door, please park near the crosswalk and wait for staff to lower the flag before crossing. In the morning, the busses are also dropping off on the lower level. Please leave room for the busses to get in and out of the parking lot.
  • If you are dropping your child off after 9:05 AM, Please do so on the upper level. Please walk your child into the office and sign them in.

Afternoon

  • Students are picked up from school on the upper-level.
  • At the end of the day, please pull up along the curb (on the upper-level) and have your child get in the car door next to the curb (passenger side). Also, as cars leave in front of you, please pull forward. Students will not be able to enter their car until they are in-between the signs that say student pick up. We want to avoid forming a second lane, because this encourages students to run between cars. For safety reasons, we are no longer allowing people to park and cross through the pick-up line to get heir child. You MUST get in line.
  • All families that have children who are car riders on a regular basis: You will be getting a Shakopee Car Rider temporary pick-up sign when you come in for Connect & Assess. If you (or whoever is picking up your child) do not have a card, you will be asked to park and go into the office to sign your child out. You can ask for multiple copies of the temporary Car Rider card if you have others that will be picking up your child as they will need to have that in their car at pickup for us to dismiss the child to them.

Walkers in the Morning

  • All walkers should enter on the lower level through the playground door or the main door.
  • Students should not arrive before 8:55 AM.
  • Students who cross 17th Avenue will do so at the crosswalk with the help of school patrols/aides. The patrols will be out at the stop by 8:53 AM.
  • Other walkers will arrive via the walking path or will cross at French Trace/Quail.
  • Students will go to the classroom or breakfast when they arrive at school.
  • Students who bike, must walk their bikes across the crosswalk on 17th and while on school property. Skateboards, heelies, scooters, or skates are not allowed at school.

Walkers in the Afternoon

  • Students who cross 17th Ave, or use the walking path, will leave through the playground door.
  • If siblings are walking together, they should meet on the playground.
  • Students who cross or walk in the direction of French Trace will leave through the doors by the office.

Other Info:

  • No students should be at school before 8:55 AM, unless arrangements have been made in advance.
  • Students should be picked by 3:45 PM and no later than 3:55 PM
  • All doors, except the one leading into office, will be locked at 9:05 am.
  • If you change your child’s normal routine, please notify your teacher and the office.
  • When picking up or dropping off your child, we ask that you leave your family pets at home.
  • Please hang up your cell phone when picking up or dropping off your child.
  • If you pick up your child during the day, or after school, this is done on the upper level.
  • If students are dropped off after the start of the school day, parents need to sign their child in at the office (upper-level parking lot).
  • If students are picked up prior to the end of the day (please notify the office prior to picking your child up), parents need to sign the students out at the office (upper-level parking lot).
