Who Was Poe

Poe was an American short-story writer, poet, critic, and editor

Early Life

Poe was born on January 19,1809 in Boston, Massachusetts, US to Elizabeth Arnold Poe and David Poe, Jr. By 1811 his father had left his family. On December 8,1811 Poe's mother died due to Tuberculosis in Richmond, Virginia.

Foster Parents

After Poe's parents died he went to live John and Frances Allan in Richmond Virginia. They were successful tobacco merchants. Edgar was close to his foster mother, but he never got close to his foster father. John Allan thought Edgar was a punk and ungrateful.

Poe's Marriage

Edgar Allan Poe married Virginia Eliza Clemm. Edgar and Virginia were first cousins. They were married when Virginia was age 13 and when Edgar was age 27.

Books Written By Poe

Edgar Allan Poe first book,Tamerlane and Other Poems,was published in 1827. He also wrote The Raven in 1845. The Raven is one of the best-known poems in the world.


Poe's Death

Edgar Allan Poe died in the hospital on October 7, 1849. To this day Poe's death has been a mystery because nobody knows what caused Poe to die.

After Poe's Death

Seven people attended Poe's funeral. His cousins' buried him fastly the day after he died. Poe is remembered to this day as one of the first American writers to become a major figure in world literature.
