Remembering 9/11

Many of us remember exactly where we were and what we were doing when the planes crashed into the towers. It is sometimes difficult to believe that is was 17 years ago. This week we took some time to help our students (that were born several years after 9/11) gain an understanding of the loss that occurred that day and the coming together of our nation to support and care for each other. Many teachers talked with students and conducted lessons about the event. At 8:46 on Tuesday morning the students and staff at CMS stood for a moment of silence and we listened to the following:

At 8:46 on September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists hijacked four airplanes and carried out attacks against targets in the United States. Two of the planes were flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. Almost 3,000 people were killed during the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

While this was one of the most tragic days in US history it triggered a time of unity and resilience within our country. Over 300 first responders died helping others during the event, 1000s of people all over the country donated blood to help victims, and people across the world raised money to help those that had lost loved ones in the attacks. As noted by President Obama during a 9/11 Anniversary speech, “it's important for us to realize that, as terrible as that day was, it brought America together and it reminded us that we're all one people."

I wish everyone a wonderful weekend!

Chromebook Roll Out - A small setback

Last week we sent home the paperwork needed for the Chromebook roll-out. This paperwork outlines the student and family responsibilities for the Chromebook and offers the $30/year insurance option. Today we handed out Chromebooks to the first grade 8 team - Green. The roll out went very smoothly and students and teachers have already reported how great it is to have this tool available.

We had planned to do the rest of grade 8 and grade seven on Tuesday, September 18th and grade 6 on Thursday, September 20th. Unfortunately, the distributors did not get the Chromebooks formatted for the full roll out dates next week. Therefore, we are pushing back our roll out by one week. Grade 8 Blue and Gold and all of grade 7 will receive their Chromebook on Tuesday, September 25th and grade 6 will receive their Chromebooks on Thursday, September 27th. While we are definitely disappointed in the wait time, we still have all of our Chromebook carts and I know teachers and students have been doing many interactive activities online already.

Don;t forget to send the user agreements signed and back into school. We cannot give your student a Chromebook until we receive this signed agreement. We will also have copies of the agreement in Portuguese, Spanish, and French available next week.

In next week's newsletter I will talk more about how the Chromebook will be used in school and at home. Below is the link to the NPS deployment resources web page:

Norwood School News Weekly TV Program

Check out our students each week!

With many hot days still ahead we encourage students to bring water with them to have in class. We do however ask that students use a reusable water bottle. Plastic disposable water bottles are not allowed in classrooms as they can be noisy and are often left around on the floors. We do ask that students use a transparent water bottle (colors are fine) so that we can see the contents of the water bottle. If you have any questions, contact the main office.

The PTO meets the second Thursday of each month to hear an update from the principal and discuss planning related to enrichment, fundraising, activities and other topics of interest. You can also stay up to date with the CMS PTO by following us on Facebook. You can contact the PTO at
