Updates for our May Whitney School Community

March 17, 2023

Notes from Your Administrative Team

Dear May Whitney Families,

We feel luckier than leprechauns to have such an amazing parent community supporting our students and staff! Thank you to our PTO and all parents contributing to the thoroughly enjoyable and incredibly tasty SOUPER LUNCHEON this past week! We were also thrilled to welcome the Trinity Irish Dancers to perform for our students - starring our own Meghan Zaehler!

WE NEED YOU! It is important to us that we continue to strive to better serve our school community, and to do that, we need your feedback. We are looking for ALL of our parents, (yes, each parent/guardian can each take this for each of their children), to take the 5 Essentials Survey! Annually, the State of Illinois asks school districts to administer the 5Essentials Survey to gather feedback from students, parents, and staff. This feedback helps guide the district in future planning and the data is shared with us if we get at least 20% parent participation. This is one of the ways that the state measures parental involvement and participation, and we know that our current response rate of 4% is not in any way indicative of the high level of support May Whitney parents give to our school! We would really appreciate if you could take a few minutes to complete this survey at your earliest convenience. To take the survey, please visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/ and select the appropriate survey to begin.

Thank you in advance for your assistance in helping us reach our goal for parent/guardian feedback!

Yours in service,

Mrs. Kopinski, Mr. Bild, Mrs. Kanoon and Dr. Zarr

March Safety Week

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Next week we will be learning about fitness and nutrition/physical well-being as our monthly safety theme. There will be various activities related to physical fitness, nutrition, and making wellness commitments throughout the week.

Below are some resources that you can use to facilitate conversations at home about healthy behaviors:

Healthy Day Checklist

Tips for Cooking with Kids & Teens

Healthy Snack Ideas

Physical Activity Ideas

Healthy Sleep Tips

Student health, well-being and safety is our top priority - and we look forward to sharing this information with our students!

Vision and Dental Examination Reminder

This is a reminder that, in compliance with rules adopted by the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Illinois State Board of Education, students in kindergarten, second and sixth grade are required to have a dental examination. Students in kindergarten and new to an Illinois school are required to have a vision examination.

If your student is missing health forms or you are uncertain if any health forms are missing, please contact the May Whitney health office.

Illinois Assessment of Readiness Testing Window

The testing window for our Third, Fourth, and Fifth grade students to take the Illinois Assessment of Readiness Test (IAR) will be March 6 - April 21. Anticipated testing dates for May Whitney students are expected to range from March 21 - April 12. Your child's teacher will communicate more specific information to you regarding classroom/grade level testing dates. It is critically important that students bring fully charged ipads to school on testing days as all tests are completed online. To alleviate any potential test anxiety, the following sites may prove helpful in building your child's confidence:
