5 Tardy Policy

Getting to school and class on time are important to student grades, and our school goals. Missing 2 days per month means your student misses 10% of the year. By 9th grade missing 20% of the year is a better predictor of dropping out than test scores. With this in mind student who are late or tardy 5 or more times in a week will serve after school detention to try and recoup some of the lost time. As a reminder classes start at 7:30 am. We understand that life happens please contact us if you have questions or concerns.

Penny Lane Study Cafe and Retakes

We will be offering Penny Lane Study Cafe after school again this year. We have divided the session into two parts: Retakes and Tutoring. If your child does not reach proficient on any part of an assessment, they can schedule a retake with their teacher. Their teacher will leave the assessment in a folder for the Penny Lane supervisors, and your child may stay after school to retake.


If your child needs additional support with any subject, they can stay after for tutoring. In order to schedule after school tutoring, students can go to Google Classroom and join the class with the following code: tld1ot From that Classroom, they can sign up to stay for tutoring.


We are trying to keep the classes small, so students can get the help they need. If students do not sign up for the sessions or schedule an assessment with their teacher, they will not be able to stay. Please let us know if you have questions or concerns regarding help for your child.

Washington's Grading Policy

At Washington, we believe in communicating clearly what students know and don't know. In the past, every teacher had the ability to create their own percentages of homework/participation/assessments/quizzes to determine letter grades. This meant that student grades depended on the teacher they had, and students were left to remember what the grading system was in each class. The staff at WMS has worked very hard to create a consistent grading system across all classes. This system is based on proficiency of the skills required by each grade level in each subject. During the quarter, we will show in RDS Parent Access how students are doing on each skill. It's not all or nothing for proficiency. On assessments, there may be many different ways teachers assess the same skill. Students have to show that they can complete the majority of each skill's items to be proficient. Skills are graded on the Proficiency Scale:


1=Far Below Proficiency

2= Approaching Proficiency

3=Proficient (students do not need to be perfect on an assessment to be proficient)

3+=Above Proficient

**Homework and classwork are intended to be practice for the assessments. Those will be marked in the gradebook as complete (Y) or not complete (N).


At the end of the grading period, we look at the percentage of skills they show to be proficient to determine the report card grade. The scale is as follows:


90%+=A

80%-89% = B

70%-79%=C

60%-60%=D

59% or below = F


Students will not have as many items in the gradebook, but we want them to show proficiency on each skill before the end of the quarter. This means we will reteach and allow for retakes each quarter. Again, there are fewer skills, but that allows for us to teach in different ways and ensure that students are learning the material required to move on. In addition, we teach students that, even if they don't know it the first time, they need to keep working. The goal is growth and constant improvement.

New Email Addresses

Starting this week all EVSC employees will be switching to Google for their email. The format will be similar to our current address firstname.lastname@evsck12.com. PBIS Points

This is the code for the Base Exchange order form. Students can use their points to order items from the PBIS Reward Store, The Base Exchange. The order form can be found by going to Google Classroom, Joining a Class, then entering the code below. All orders will be filled and ready for the students during their grade level assigned days during lunch periods.

Continental Classic Homeroom Battle

Students were introduced to the Homeroom Battle this week. Several teachers came together to create an exciting competition for students throughout the year. Each quarter, students will earn points for their homerooms for participation (attendance + participation in after-school programs), behavior (no office referrals), and grades (points for each grade + points for improvement). The winning homeroom from each grade level will earn a trip to Holiday World at the end of the school year. We're looking forward to letting the competition begin!

Cell Phones

Students are allowed to carry their cell phones to school for communication purposes. However, we ask that cell phones are kept in their lockers from 7:30-2:30. Students can turn their phones in to the office in the morning if they'd like them to stay in the safe. Phones can be picked back up at the end of the day outside room 11 with Mrs. Miller. If students are caught with their phones during the day, we will ask to keep it until the end of the day. Students can pick it up at the end of the day once. The second time, we will ask the parents to come pick it up. Thank you for keeping our classrooms a no-phone zone!
