Principally Speaking
Well, we can officially share the good news that Danville Community Middle School earned a school grade of an A from the Indiana Department of Education! The grade is determined by two factors:
1. actual student performance on the ISTEP+ test (73.6% passing)
2. student growth in performance from the previous year (growth score of 115)
They then take those scores individually and multiple them by .50, (73.6*.50=36.80)(115*.50=57.50), and add the results together, (36.80+57.50), to determine our total score, 94.3, which equates to an A. While I am very proud of our students and staff for this accomplishment, I would like to see our actual student performance playing a larger role in the overall score than it did this year. Our growth pushed us to the A this time. I am positive we will see a higher student passing percentage based upon this year's work.
Additionally, there are a few items to remember as we welcome in the year of 2017.
School will be closed from Monday, December 19 through Monday, January 2nd. Monday, January 2nd is a NON-STUDENT attendance day. Please be sure your students know to set their first alarms 2017 for Tuesday morning instead of Monday.
On behalf of our staff, we hope you have a great winter break with your children, family, and friends. We look forward to continuing to work together as a team to provide your child with the best educational experience here at Danville Community Middle School. There is no greater gift than to have a positive impact on a child’s life. I’m reminded how fortunate we all are with the opportunity to share in this gift. Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year! I look forward to 2017! As always, I am honored and thankful to serve you and your students as the principal of Danville Community Middle School.
Sincerely,
Marsha Webster

An Itchy Topic: Head Lice
In accordance with school corporation policy, we are required to share our pediculosis policy with the public on an annual basis. We have also included general information for your reading pleasure.
The main way head lice spread is from close, prolonged head-to-head contact. Head lice are crawling insects. They cannot jump, hop, or fly. There is a small chance that head lice will spread because of sharing items such as combs, brushes, and hats.
Many people have the impression that a person becomes infested with head lice because s/he is unclean. This is NOT TRUE. Frequent bathing neither prevents head lice nor eliminates the infestation.
Head lice are elongated insects and are greyish-white in color. They do not have wings nor can they jump. They do move very quickly which can make it difficult to find in a child's hair. Because they can be so hard to see, the diagnosis of head lice is often made by examining the scalp for NITS. A nit is the louse egg. It is tear-shaped and varies in color from white to yellowish-brown. Head lice attach each nit to a hair shaft in a water-proof, cement-like substance. This means they cannot be washed or brushed out of the hair or scalp like dandruff and other such particles that sometimes look like nits to the naked eye. Clusters of nits may be found in any section of the hair so a careful examination should be made of the entire scalp.
Attached is a sheet with information from the American Academy of Pediatrics about head lice and DCSC Pediculosis (head lice) Policy.
