On this day in 1983, the Pentagon awarded a production contract worth more than $1 billion to AM General Corporation to develop 55,000 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV), nicknamed the Humvee. In 1992, a civilian version of the Humvee (the Hummer) went on sale.

Shot One: Making the best of your pdfs

Here is a collection of some very good add-ons to use on Google Drive to edit and share PDFs. Some of the things you can do with these tools include: merge several documents into a single PDF, split or extract pages into one PDF, convert PDFs to images, compress and reduce the size of your PDFs and many more. All of these add-ons are web based and do not require any software installation. You simply add the Chrome extension to your browser and start experimenting with it right away.

SHOT TWO: SAS 5th Graders on a podcast!

A few weeks ago, I ran into an old friend at a party. We got to talking and she told me that has some friends who do a science podcast for kids called Tumble. Of course, I geeked out...and then soon moved on to another conversation. Flash forward to a few weeks later, and this friend e-mailed me and asked me if her podcaster friends could come to SAS and record my students' questions for some upcoming episodes. I am happy to announce that the first episode featuring our SAS students is ready to roll. What amazing question did our kids ask? "Why do bats hang upside down?"

The podcast is about 15 minutes long and worth your time, I swear. The kids are awesome and SAS (and I!) get a shoutout at the end.

YOU CAN LISTEN HERE. Audio of the kids was also featured on a podcast called Brains On, which is the most popular podcast in the Kids category of iTunes!

The video above will only make sense if you listen to the podcast! But even if you don't listen, hey, it's a bat on a treadmill! How cool is that?

See you next Tuesday!
