A message from Principal Saxberg

PJ Drive

Century Elementary School recently held a pajama drive for youth in need throughout Grand Forks. I am happy to announce that we collected over 160 pairs of pajamas which will be donated to agencies and organizations throughout Grand Forks for children. To celebrate, students and staff wore hats on Monday and pajamas on Tuesday if they wished.

Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Reminders--Watch Out for Children Always!

Here are some important reminders regarding our plan:

*Use the right lane (closest to school) for drop-off/pick up. DO NOT DROP OFF OR PICK UP CHILDREN IN THE LEFT LANE AND HAVE THEM GO BETWEEN CARS.

*Use the left lane for drive through only.

*Do not park your car in the LEFT LANE (drive through lane) behind parked cars or handicapped spaces and leave your car unattended

*Stop at all crosswalks.

*Be on the lookout for children at all times.

*Be courteous, kind and patient. The parking lot is very busy for 8- 10 minutes before and after school. Thank you in advance for following these important safety rules at school

Phone Number and Address Changes If your phone and/or cell phone number, emergency number, email address or mailing address has changed or will be changing, please contact the school office as soon as possible. We must have a current phone number and address on file to ensure contacts can be made when necessary. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Families of 5th grade students

If you are considering a transfer request for next year, the completed form is due to the requested middle school office by February 25, 2022. Below I will have an attachment of the letter from Grand Forks School District.

Snacks in School

Some teachers schedule a snack time during the school day. You are not required to provide a snack for your child. However, if you do, please send snacks in accordance with the following Nutrition Standards outlined in the Grand Forks Public School District Wellness Policy.

● Snacks should include a nutrition label

● *Sugar is not the first ingredient

● Candy is not allowed

● All snacks are peanut and nut free

● Any fruit or vegetable is allowable

● Yogurt and cheese are allowable (with freezer pack to keep cool)

● Plain water in any size is allowable

● Community snacks requested by your child’s teacher must come to school in the original packaging that includes a nutrition label. Snacks that contain or may contain peanuts or other nuts (for peanut and tree nut restricted schools), do not fall within the nutrition standards listed above, and/or do not have a nutrition label, will be sent home with your child.

*Different names for sugar: brown sugar, corn sweetener, corn syrup, dextrose, fructose, glucose, honey, fruit juice concentrate, high fructose corn syrup, invert sugar, lactose maltose, malt syrup, molasses, raw sugar, sucrose, syrup

Birthday Snacks in school

We recognize the important role of parents/guardians and school staff in educating our students about healthy life styles. Due to an increased number of students with severe food allergies and the higher levels of severity, we no longer celebrate student birthdays with a "birthday snack" in our schools. Parents are welcome to find other non-food items to send to school if they wish. For example, a book, game, or school supplies may be donated to your child’s classroom.

Morning Procedures

Morning Procedures

Breakfast - only students eating breakfast will enter doors #3 and #9 for breakfast. Breakfast begins at 7:40 am. Please do not drop your student off any earlier.

Students not eating breakfast at school will enter the building at the door assignments below.

Please arrive no earlier than 8:15 am.

Kindergarten - Door 1

Grade 1 - Door 13

Grade 2 - Door 12

Grade 3 - Door 10

Grade 4 - Door 3

Grade 5 - Door 2

Students arriving after 8:25 AM will need to enter Door #1 (Main Office Door). Parents make sure your child is able to get into the building.

The beginning of each school day is an important time for procedures and routines, so it is very important for our students to be in their classrooms by 8:25. Students arriving after 8:25 are recorded as tardy.

SCHOOL DISMISSAL

Student Dismissal- Students are dismissed at 3:00 pm at the same assigned door for arrival. Students must be picked up promptly. Students will meet parents/guardians outside at their assigned door. Older siblings may meet their younger siblings at their assigned doors.

Contact Information Changes

Remember to contact the school office if you have a change in the information you gave us at the beginning of the school year. This could be phone numbers, addresses, parent/guardian place of employment, emergency numbers, e-mail, etc. We want to have the most up-to-date information for mailings, emergencies, etc.

Early release dates - 1:30 dismissal

During the Early Dismissal days our teachers work together in teams to plan for how to best meet the needs of Century Students. The time allows them to collaborate, problem solve, plan instruction, and develop methods to best teach students academically and socially.

News from the District

Let your student in on all of the things you find wonderful about them. They need to hear many positive comments about their lives, who they are as individuals, and all of the great things they have to look forward to if they are safe and healthy.
