Campuses Showcase their AVIDtude!!
On September 29th, ECISD hosted their first AVID Central Division Regional District Director Workshop at Hays Magnet. AVID District Directors from the area attended the workshop which included a site showcase. Hays' very own student led Justice League served as tour guides and Hays' K-5 AVID teachers opened their doors and represented ECISD AVID Elementary fabulously!
On October 27th, ECISD hosted the Regional AVID Elective Teacher Workshop at Crockett MS. AVID elective teachers from the area attended the workshop which also included a site showcase. Crockett AVID students served as tour guides and AVID site team members held a panel to answer questions regarding how they use a systematic approach to make Crockett an AVID schoolwide campus.
Thank you for all your hard work showcasing how you implement AVID to ensure student success!!
Thank you Stonegate Fellowship for 4 motivational years!
A few words from Melvin:
"I am so grateful that I have been able to be a regular part of the lives of you all, your students, and your community. I just want to say thank you for all the friendships, love, laughs, and memories I have made since I began speaking there. You ALL are AMAZING!"
Thank you Stonegate and Melvin for bringing hope and motivation to our students these last four years.
Featured WICOR Strategy - Strategies For ALL Students
Critical Reading Process
The 'R' in WICOR is Reading. The Critical Reading Process begins with a plan for reading. Teachers establish a purpose for reading and select texts appropriately. The teachers then select strategies that will be used throughout the process: pre-reading, interacting with the text and extending the text while developing and practicing academic vocabulary.
Prereading Strategies include: building background (historical and rhetorical context), reviewing new vocabulary, surveying the text, making predictions, and/or reviewing author information to determine the purpose and audience.
Interacting with the text strategies include: marking the text, writing in the margins, creating leveled questions, charting the text, and summarizing and clarifying the text.
Extending the text strategies include: reflection journals, one-pagers, Socratic seminars, four-corners discussions, and/or 3-part source integration statements.
The AVID Weekly resource featured below is an excellent resource to aid teachers in selecting high interest texts.
Online Reading Resource
The ECISD AVID Department has ensured that each Elementary, Middle and High School has a unique password to access AVID Weekly. Contact your campus AVID coordinator to get your password. This valuable resource can be shared with all content and grade level teachers. Since it is web-based, AVID Weekly is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
