CAASPP Testing, Schedule, and Resources

We will be on a modified schedule for State testing, which is attached below. It is very important for your student to get a good night’s rest each night and eat a good breakfast. This year instead of testing first thing in the morning we will test after brunch so that the students are more awake and can have brunch beforehand. We will also provide snacks during testing each day. If you want your student to work through some practice questions, they can go to the following website: and click on the green “Student Interface” button. We have also been doing a little practice each week since February in math and language arts classes.


Graduation this year is on Friday, June 7, from 6-7 pm on the Kennedy field. There are no assigned seats, but we put out over 1,000 chairs, which is usually plenty. It is first come first served. Students who are participating in graduation will need to check in at 5 pm to their designated check in area (more details to come). Gates will remain locked until 5 pm so no one can reserve seating ahead of time. As we get closer to this date, I will give out specifics about exactly which gates will and will not be opened at 5 pm since families get very excited about getting to the graduation seating. The blacktop will be open to help with the parking situation.

Students will be loaned a forest green gown for graduation. We will hand that out the week of graduation. (The students were each measured earlier in the year so that we could make sure we had the right gown length for each student). The gown needs to be returned after the ceremony by around 7:30 pm, which is when the graduation party starts in the gym. When students return their gown they will receive their wristband for the party.

A reminder, which we have been communicating since January to parents and students, students must have a cumulative 2.0 gpa to walk through graduation. We held to that last year and plan to do so again.Those in danger of not walking have been meeting with administrators during second and third trimester and are aware of the gpa needed this trimester to achieve the cumulative 2.0.

May 4 Sign Up

As mentioned last week, we will do a review day the weekend before State math testing. It will take place on Saturday, May 4, from 9 am to 12 pm. If you would like your child to attend, please click on the link below and fill out the information.

Summer Music

We are offering some free summer music lessons again this summer for our students. Instead of Saturdays though, Mrs. Federico-Youngs would like to try something different. Please see the attached schedule. If you have any questions, please reach out to her directly.

Elective Selection

This week we will hand out elective selection materials for next year. Attached are a preview of the hard copies coming home.

Cafeteria Food

I spent some time looking through student feedback on the climate survey. Aside from the students being unhappy that we have become stricter with the cell phone policies, which I am fine with, there were a lot of complaints about the cafeteria food. So I reached out to Anna Lague who is the head of nutrition in RCSD. She was great about letting our students have a voice and helping us to potentially make some changes. She sent out an Operations Manager this past week who worked with some of our students. They took pictures of the food and provided feedback on Monday. On Tuesday they went over the findings and some suggestions. Here is what they came up with below. (They took some nice pictures).

VIP Lounge

This past Tuesday we started our second round of VIP Lounges. Like last time, students were invited to the VIP lounge who grew 2+ grade levels on their Star Reading test or tested at/or above grade level. We started with 7th grade this time and will have lounge time for 6th and 8th grade this week. Per student request, we had pizza this time instead of nachos. Instead of popcorn we did root beer floats. Like last time, we setup video games, board games, the Foosball table, and the one-on-one basketball game. Below are some pictures. (Thank you to student Ramie Vetter who took them for me since I was scooping ice cream and pouring root beer non-stop almost the whole lunchtime).

Chromebook Charging

Please make sure that your student’s Chromebook is charged each night. Students need their Chromebook to complete classwork, and many of the textbooks are digital, so this is how they access them in class. This will also be really important for State testing in a couple of weeks since they will use their Chromebook for this each day. I would suggest that you have your student’s charger in your room so that the Chromebook charges all night and your student isn’t on the Chromebook while you are sleeping. I also suggest you do the same thing with your student’s cell phone, if applicable.

Save the Date

Thursday, May 2, 7 to 8 pm: Vape/JUUL workshop to learn more about what these are, the dangers, and how to help your student. These are becoming a huge epidemic nationwide for middle school and high school students. More information to come.

Student Council Fundraiser

Student Council is doing a mini-fundraiser the next couple of weeks to support the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Students can make a $1 donation to support cancer and fill out a paper footprint that we will display around campus.

WEB - Save the Dates

On Friday, April 26, we will hold an informational meeting and pass out applications at lunch for 7th graders who want to be WEB Leaders next year. WEB (Where Everybody Belongs) is a year-long program to help sixth graders feel more comfortable, as well as help them to be successful and social during their first year of middle school.

Since many of you are already planning your summer, here are the dates WEB Leaders must be available for training and for orientations. Most of the other events will occur during the school day next year, with the exception of one or two events that will take place for after school.

Redwood City STEAM Fest

Thank you to new local Redwood City company, Community Best, Inc. for sponsoring a booth for Kennedy at this year’s Redwood City STEAM Fest taking placing on Saturday, April 27, from 11 am to 3 pm. We are looking for some students and parents to come and help out for an hour or two to lead STEAM activities for kids that Kennedy staff are planning. 8th Grade Graduation Festivities

8th grade graduation events are almost here. Your kids will participate in a day trip to Great America, the graduation dance, field day events and the graduation ceremony, including gowns for all kids. These wonderful events take money to produce and we are asking for donations of $75 per child to cover the costs. Without your donation we won’t be able to make all of these events happen. Please make a contribution today so we can make your child’s graduation from Kennedy a memorable one!
