Literacy ~ Reading to Learn: Grasping Main Ideas and Text Structures
In this unit, students will read nonfiction texts to learn about topics they are already passionate about and seeking to learn even more than they may already know. This unit spotlights skills and habits essential to readers of expository nonfiction: recognizing nonfiction text features, taking notes about their reading, determining importance, finding main idea and supporting details; figuring out and using new content-specific vocabulary; and comparing and contrasting information learned across texts.

Math
In math, we are continuing our unit on Place Value, Rounding, Time, and Problem Solving with Units of Measure. We have spent the first few weeks on rounding to the nearest ten/hundred and adding/subtracting 2-3 digit numbers so please continue to practice these skills at home! Students should be able to identify what two tens or two hundreds a number is between (for example, 43 is between 40 and 50 and 324 is between 300 and 400) and which it is closest to. Please also continue adding and subtracting at home, as well.
Next, we will move to telling time to the nearest minute, elapsed time, and measurement using kilograms, grams, liters, & milliliters so please continue incorporating those skills into your daily life! Quiz your child on time using an analog clock and incorporate elapsed time by asking things like “if it is 4:30 now and we are eating dinner in 45 minutes, what time is dinner?” Expose them to grams, kilograms, liters, and milliliters in your kitchen and while at the grocery store.
