Social Media
Dear Brooklyn Families,
As some of you may be aware it has been reported that Youtube and WhatsApp recently had the reemergence of something called "The Momo Challenge."
The Momo Challenge first surfaced in 2016. In the challenge children are encouraged to contact a figure named ‘Momo’ and are asked to complete tasks to avoid undesirable outcomes (e.g., having their personal information shared, harm to them or their families, being cursed). The tasks range from innocuous, such as watching a horror film to challenges of self harm, suicide, and sending photographic evidence. The video clips enticing children to participate have been seen popping up during videos such as ‘Fortnite’ and ‘Peppa Pig’.
In order to avoid possible negative outcomes of being exposed to such challenges, we hope that parents will continue to be vigilant regarding the technological content that their children are exposed to. Likewise, it is important to emphasize to children the importance of reporting any discussion or thoughts of self harm, or other dangerous behaviors to an adult immediately. Students and parents can make reports on the district’s website using the “Stay Safe. Speak Up! Student Hotline” (located on the district home web page, right hand side, towards the bottom).
Finally, there are several resource links below for more information on how to protect children when they are using technology.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me or our school counselors.
Thank you,
Cristin Cicco
Tips to make YouTube a little safer...
Hello Parents!
As you all know, YouTube can be a wonderful tool to use at home and in the classroom for the development and education of children.
However there are some dangers with YouTube. With YouTube’s heavy presence in the news lately I wanted to make sure you were aware of some simple ways to ensure your child’s safety on YouTube
Turn off “autoplay”
On a browser, it is located in the upper right hand corner when a video is playing. “On” is blue “off” is a grey white.
On a phone, it is located in the middle of screen to the right while playing a video.
Crate safe playlists of videos that are appropriate for your child
Make sure your child uses YouTube in an area where you can hear what they are watching
If your child mentions something you aren’t aware of, look it up and watch for yourself!
When in doubt, download “YouTube kids” instead. It filters videos. While it is not perfect, it is much safer
Most importantly, if you feel uncomfortable, GO WITH YOUR GUT! If you are uneasy about content, it’s probably not suitable for your child.

State Testing
State testing is right around the corner. We know that this time of year brings with it a lot of mixed emotions for our students. We see many students struggle with test anxiety and it can show up in headaches, crying, trouble concentrating, avoidance of school etc. Both Mrs. Bir and Mrs. Smith will be working with students in grade 3-7 in an effort to plan, prepare, incorporate positive self-talk and we could use your help. While we do our part, we hope that you can help us by taking steps now to prepare.
Somethings that you can do at home are:
- Encourage a good night sleep
- Give positive affirmations (i.e. notes in their lunches or book bags)
- Talking about the test
- Reading each night
- Ensure that your child is in the habit of arriving to school on time.
- Attend your child's school conference to discuss your students strengths/weakness and how else you can support their preparation!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Bir and Mrs. Smith
Bedtime Math App
It is a quick simple story with a few leveled math questions, only takes about 3-4 minutes each evening and promotes great conversations.
Check it out by going to your app store (andriod or apple) and download it. It is FREE.
Outdoor Recess Guidelines
The weather is starting to turn a little seasonal, it is is snowy and cold.
Please make sure your child has the proper clothing to go outside.
We will go outside when it is cold and snowing.
Our guidelines for cold temperatures will be followed and monitored closely.
The temperature for outdoor recess is 20 degrees with the windchill.
Please make sure student have appropriate gear to be in the elements. Winter coats, gloves, hats are important. Students will not be permitted to play in the snow in street shoes, they will have to have boots on.
Students should have hats, gloves, winter coats, boots if it is snowing or there is snow on the ground.
If your child is in need of any items, let us know, we have some extra's.
Label your child's gear with their names and if they lose something, check our lost and found.
