MESSAGE FROM SCHOOL BOARD: SUPERINTENDENT SEARCH UPDATE

On March 10, the Board of School Directors formally engaged the services of Montgomery County Intermediate Unit professional consultant Dr. John J. George to support a Superintendent search. Shortly after, community members were asked to provide critical input, via an electronic survey, regarding the leadership qualities desired in the next superintendent. The Board is appreciative of the more than 650 community members who completed the survey. Survey feedback guided the development of our professional profile and interview questions. It also informed the paper screening process mentioned below. Survey results are attached and can also be accessed by clicking on the Superintendent Search Update story, located on our District website in the News section.

In mid April the Board paper screened over two dozen, qualified candidates and narrowed down the hiring field. We recently completed first round, face-to-face interview sessions with a panel that included Board members, administrators, individuals from all of our bargaining units and representatives from various parent organizations. We are thankful to those stakeholders who have dedicated time and effort to the early phases of our search process. We advance to second round interviews knowing that we have incorporated the strong voice of our community.


The Board takes the responsibility of hiring Cheltenham School District’s next leader very seriously. As a group, we are exceptionally aware of the importance of this task. We will do everything in our power to ensure that we achieve excellence. For now, we confidently move ahead in our process with a strong belief that we will identify the right candidate to guide our district for years to come.

SURVEY RESULTS

FOURTH GRADE VIOLIN CONCERT, MAY 11

All are invited to the upcoming 4th grade violin concert at Elkins Park School. The musical event, which features over 120 students playing under the direction of Mrs. Judy Harvey, is free of charge and open to the entire school district community. Performance start time is 7:30 p.m.

ELKINS PARK SCHOOL ORIENTATION FOR 4TH GRADE PARENTS, MAY 13

All current 4th grade parents are invited to the Elkins Park Auditorium on Wednesday, May 13 at 7:00PM for a full orientation to 5th grade.

5TH ANNUAL ALL-ELEMENTARY TRACK MEET, JUNE 2

Dear Elementary Parent/Guardian,


The Cheltenham All-Elementary Track Meet is an exciting annual event that will take place on Tuesday June 2nd! Every Cheltenham SD 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grader can participate, and all abilities are welcome! Your son or daughter may compete in ONE event from the list below. All students may also sign up for a 4x100m relay at the event check-in table.


Recently your child received an elementary track meet information form at school. Please read this form as it contains additional information about the event. At the bottom of the form is a section to fill out, detach, and have your son or daughter return to his/her physical education teacher. This form must be returned by Wednesday May 20th. We will also hold the Cheltenham Miracle Mile immediately following the meet. All parents, students, and staff are welcome to run. Entry is $5 per person and $20 for a family of four or more. A limited number of unique T-shirts will also be available for purchase. All proceeds go to the local branch of The Special Olympics. In the past we have raised over $500 for this cause. I hope you will consider donating and participating with your family and friends.

5:45 – Long Jump, Softball Throw

6:00 – 50m Dash

6:15 – 100m Dash

6:30 – 200m Dash

7:00 – 400m Dash

7:30 – 800m Run (Girls & Boys together)

7:45 – 4x100m Relay (Sign-up @ Check-in table)

8:00 – Miracle Mile (to benefit Special Olympics)

CURRICULUM OPEN HOUSE - K-6 MATH PROGRAM SELECTION, MAY 21

All members of the Cheltenham School District community, including parents, students, teachers, and residents, are invited to attend a Community Open House on Thursday, May 21. The event will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the auditorium of the Administration Building.

During this event, guests will be able to see sample materials from two math programs which are being considered for adoption in grades K-6 for the 2015-2016 school year. For a quick overview, you may visit the program websites: enVision math 2.0 and Eureka Math .
District personnel and publisher representatives will also be on hand throughout the day to share information about the process and answer questions.

Gerald Aungst, supervisor of gifted and elementary math for the district, will give a formal presentation on the selection and pilot process at 11:00 a.m. The same presentation will then be repeated at 5:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. No registration is necessary. These presentations are open to all who wish to attend.

STORY OF THE WEEK: Mrs. Rubin Honored as a Voice of Inspiration for Teaching Excellence

Myers Elementary teacher, Mrs. Mimi Rubin, was honored on Thursday, May 7 as a recipient of the Voices of Inspiration Award for Teaching Excellence. Established by Freedom Credit Union and the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit, the award recognizes those teachers who exceed expectations in meeting their students' needs.

Twenty-three teachers were selected as finalists for Freedom's Voices of Inspiration Award for Teaching Excellence. To win the award, a teacher must be nominated. In addition, he/she must display inspirational characteristics and an extraordinary dedication to the education of children. Congratulations to Mrs. Rubin for this well deserved recognition and special thanks for being a Voice of Inspiration for the Cheltenham School District.
