JMS Weekly Update

Week of 3.29.2020

Dear JMS Families,

This week finds us beginning Flexible Instructional Days (FIDs). More information about FIDs can be found below. FIDs will begin on Monday, March 30th and continue through Friday, April 3rd.

We understand that some families/children may be excited and ready to jump back in to their educational experience. We also understand that other families/children may have feelings of being stressed and overwhelmed by what is happening in the world right now. We are prepared to meet you where you are. We are here to support you and the children throughout this process.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to your child's teacher(s) or myself and Mr. Zeiders with questions.

We hope that you and you family continue to stay healthy.

Sincerely,

Dr. Sarah Shaw, Principal

Mr. Jeff Zeiders, Assistant Principal

Families In Need of Technology

Families who are in need technology devices can still request them through this link.

Quarter 3 Report Cards/ Q3 & Q4 Grading

The end of the 3rd marking period will be Tuesday, April 7. Report Cards will be available on April 16th. To reduce academic anxiety and concerns as we transition to at home learning, the District has opted to move to a Pass/Fail grading scale.

  • Pass (P) = a student earning a 60% or better in the final calculation of quarter grades.
  • Fail (F) = a student earning a 59% or lower in the final calculation of quarter grades.
  • These grades will be exempt from the QPA calculation.

Schools Closure Extended

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to be most critical to everything that we do. Last week, Governor Wolf ordered a “stay at home order”. In addition, Governor Wolf further ordered schools to be closed for two more weeks. Currently, our schools are closed and we do not anticipate returning to school before April 14, 2020.

School At Home (S@H)

We will be implementing School at Home (S@H) instruction beginning April 6th. This is intended to continue the asynchronous nature of delivering instruction while adding a component that facilitates the “continuity of education” expected by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. More details coming soon.

Spring Break - S@H Days

Spring Break was scheduled for April 8, 9, 10 & 13. These days will continue to be at home instructional days. Families who observe religious holidays should plan accordingly to ensure instruction is received and assignments are completed.

8th Grade Washington DC Trip - CANCELLED

In light of the health and safety concerns associated with the COVID-19 virus, our state suggests that we should refrain from non-essential travel. Specifically, the Wolf Administration strongly encourages the suspension of large gatherings, events, and conferences of more than 10 people. The White House guidelines ask that individuals and groups cancel any gatherings planned over the next eight weeks. In this environment of uncertainty and quickly changing information, it is impossible to accurately predict when restrictions will be lifted, sights will re-open, and travel in large groups will be able to occur.

With this guidance and the unlikely possibility of having the trip this year, we will be cancelling the trip and pursuing the refund aspect of the contract. In no way would we place the health and safety of our 8th grade students or chaperones at risk.

Other Information

Grounds, Fields, & Playgrounds - CLOSED

Until further notice, all Mt. Lebanon School District grounds, fields, and playgrounds are closed for any use. This aligns with the municipal closure of fields and the Governor's declaration. Closures will be enforced by the Mt. Lebanon Police Department.
