Hello Lemme Families,
In kindergarten through second grade the students have been learning about personal safety. We have been talking about important safety rules including safe touches, unsafe touches and unwanted touches. The students have also identified adults that they feel comfortable talking to if they need to report an unsafe touch.
In third through fifth grade we are in the middle of our Steps to Respect bullying prevention unit. We started this unit by talking about friendships and the importance of showing one another kindness. We also discussed the 3 R’s of bullying prevention which include:
1. Recognize: Bullying is unfair and one-sided. It happens when someone keeps hurting, frightening, threatening, or leaving someone out on purpose.
2. Refuse: If you feel safe, refuse the bullying by telling the person to stop.
3. Report: Always report to an adult you trust!
In sixth grade the students are in the middle of their health and wellness unit. We started this unit by discussing substance abuse prevention. The students learned about different drugs and how they affect your brain and body. We also talked about their reasons for staying away from drugs. The next part of this unit deals with personal safety. We will be discussing safe and unsafe touches as well as physical and sexual abuse.
Beginning the second week in April, I will be on maternity leave for the rest of the school year. There will be a long term substitute here who will be taking over my classroom counseling lessons. I will look forward to seeing everyone again next fall!

There is a lot of great learning going on in the library!
Here are some highlights of library classes:
Kindergarten did an author study on Mo Willems, to the delight of everybody. Nothing like Willems' memorable characters to make us laugh! We learned how to draw his character Pigeon and made up our own book covers. We are now starting research on animals, creating an ABC book as a class.
1st grade learned about shadow and light in science class and have been working on creating a story as a class, we are excited to share our final product with you! They also worked on understanding the difference between realistic fiction and fantasy.
2nd grade wrote letters to a classroom in France for first hand research about what school is like in a different country. They are putting together a digital bulletin board to share with this pen pal class about our American school as well. They have been working on learning alphabetical order out past the first letter by being word detectives, and are getting really good at finding where books are in the library based upon their type.
3rd grade worked very hard on the Optimist Good Reader Program, they learned about different genres like historical fiction and poetry in library class, and learned how to write good summaries. They also had an epic showdown of Dr. Seuss books in a Seuss Madness- with The Sneetches rising to the top!
4th grade did an amazing job on the Optimist Good Reader Program. They really pushed themselves to read outside of their comfort levels and did a great job on being readers of news. We also completed a unit reading books about the experiences of African-Americans throughout history, plotting a timeline of the picture books by using good close reading and beginning textual citation skills.
5th grade did a unit on being an up-stander online and creating a good online identity through smart choices. We are finishing up a unit now on note-taking and paraphrasing by exploring the website of the San Diego Zoo.
6th graders also did a unit on digital citizenship and are now working on a research unit centered around famous art heists. Each member is responsible for the research of one facet of the heist (art stolen, artist who created it, where it was stolen, how) and then together they are writing a news article, citations included!
In addition, there are lots of great things happening at the Makerspace.
