Why he got involved
At the age of 14, Joseph Smith was determined to know which of the many religions he should join. While searching, he found a passage in the Bible telling any who lacked wisdom to "ask of God" (James 1:5).
In 1820, he went to a set of secluded woods to ask God which church he should join. While praying, Joseph was visited by two personages, whom identified themselves as God the Father and Jesus Christ.
Joseph was told not to join any churches
How he was involved
In 1823, Joseph was visited by an angel, Moroni, who told him of an ancient record of God's encounters with the former inhabitants of America; that were written on golden plates.
1827, Joseph got the record, afterwards he began translating it by the "Gift of God", this resulted in the Book of Mormons-published in March of 1830.
April 6, 1830, Joseph organized The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He became the first president of the church
