DUAL IMMERSION PARENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING

The Dual Immersion Parent Advisory Committee (DIAPC) will hold it's first meeting on October 3rd at 5:30 @ SHES.

The goal of the DIPAC is to help ensure that parent voices are a central component of our planning as we develop our middle school dual immersion program. This committee will serve in an advisory role contributing information, conducting surveys, sharing ideas, and helping formulate a plan for the future. If you are interested in participating on the committee please contact Mrs. Maier, principal of SHES at ymaier@alpineschools.net.

COLLEGE SPIRIT DAYS EVERY MONDAY

We are implementing College Spirit Days on our campuses every Monday this year. We want our students to begin thinking about college and beyond every week in which they are on our campuses. Students are encouraged to wear a college shirt or gear every Monday. So, connect with your college or a college your child is interested in and buy a college t-shirt. Check out some of the classrooms decorated with university logos.

STUDENT BOARD MEMBERS

Congratulations to JMMS 8th graders Kaitlin R. and Neel N. These two dynamic kids are the new Student School Board Members for the 2017-18 year. Neel and Kaitlin will be the voice of students bringing forth ideas and concerns to the Board of Trustees. We look forward to having them at our monthly Board meetings.

STUDENTS SHOW HUGE SUPPORT FOR BURNETT ELEMENTARY HURRICANE HARVEY RELIEF

Our wonderful and caring students from all across the District took the time to offer some kind words and relief to hurricane affected students at Burnett Elementary School in Texas. The letters will be mailed out to them and hopefully we can gain pen pals from halfway across the country. Thank you to those kids who wrote very touching letters. I'm sure the kids at Burnett will enjoy the distraction from their ongoing clean up.

JMMS CULINARY ARTS STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN KIWANIS CHILI COOK OFF

At JMMS we have developed a culinary arts elective. Our students in the culinary arts class first had to compete at a chili cook off with their fellow classmates. Fifteen teams made their own versions of chili for staff and other students to taste and judge. The winning team went on to compete at the Kiwanis Chili Cook Off.

FARM TO SCHOOL PROGRAM WITH BARONS

We are pleased to share that our schools are partnering with Barons Market to build a "Farm To School" program. The program will enable students to grow gardens in raised beds and harvest their own crops. There is no better way to teach our students about making healthy choices than growing your own food!

NEW AUSD LOGO DESIGN CONTEST

As we continue to focus on improving AUSD, we are launching a contest to update our District logo. Students, parents, staff and community members are encouraged to submit their logo entries to malvarez@alpineschools.net. by Oct. 20, 2017.

ESS ADDING NEW STEAM OPTIONS

The AUSD Extended Student Services (ESS) program provides a comprehensive program of developmentally appropriate curriculum and activities before and after school.

The administrative team is in the process of making positive changes to the program. The team is planning and beginning to implement a more structured daily schedule that includes homework time and STEAM activities (Science / Technology / Engineering / Art / Math). The CELC site has added a rest time for our TK students who get out of school at 1:35pm. In addition, we have increased parent communication through monthly electronic newsletters. Parent and student feedback and ideas are encouraged and welcomed. For more information about our two ESS sites, please contact Tamara Ripke at 619-659-8250 or tripke@alpineschools.net.

AMERICAN INDIAN PARENT COMMITTEE IS OFF AND RUNNING

Our American Indian Parent Committee is off and running this year. Parents from the committee attended a two-day symposium, Building Student Agency Through Mindsets Relationships and Innovations, with Dr. Newman, principals and teachers. We are proud to share that AUSD is the only District in the County to have parents attend this training alongside District staff.

ELEMENTARY REPORT CARD IS GOING ONLINE

We are continuing to look at ways to improve opportunities for communication with our parents and students. Soon our elementary report card will be available online. Teachers will input grades directly into Synergy and parents and students will have access to their report card online, just as it occurs in middle school.

WATER TESTING IS IN PROGRESS

JMMS ROBOTICS IS COMPETING

The Engineering Design Class will be competing in the First Lego League Competition. They are judge on three things, The Robot Game, The Project and Core Values (Team Work). The theme this year is Hydro Dynamics.

1. The Robot Game - Students are programming their Lego Mindstorms EV3 Robot to score points on the Hydro Dynamics playing field.

2. The Project- Students identified a problem with water. They came up with an original project to solve the problem. Right now they are in the designing stages.

3. Core Values- Students will be judge on teamwork, ability to interact and explain their process with judges, and the teams overall attitude at the event.

4. The qualifying event will take place Sunday, Nov. 12th, in Chula Vista. They will be judged in all three categories. At this event, they select teams to advance to the Legoland Competition. Last year we had a few teams advance.

LUNCH PAYMENTS ONLINE

NOMINATE AN AUSD EMPLOYEE FOR RECOGNITION

Would you like to recognize an AUSD Employee or team for their exemplary work? We have launched two new employee recognition programs this year: #TEAM AUSD AWARD and Everyday Heroes Recognition Program. The goal of these two programs is to recognize the valuable contributions of District employees to our students, schools and community.

NOTES FROM THE PTA/PTSA

School is well under way and so is the PTSA at Alpine Elementary. The AES PTSA has already hosted dinner for Back to School Night, a Scholastic Book Fair, popsicles during orientation, a teacher luncheon, and a minimum day movie, plus each student has received a spirit bracelet to wear on Fridays. Now the AES PTSA is focusing on their membership drive dubbed “The Roadrunner Race” and the Halloween Carnival on Friday, October 20th from 5:00-9:00pm. Click here to read the full article.

Boulder Oaks Elementary PTA has had a great start to the school year. We had a huge increase in parent volunteers and kicked off the year with a successful family night and an amazing BMX bike character building assembly. We are looking forward to a year full of providing educational resources and programs to our students and their families.

Shadow Hills Elementary School has had a fun and exciting beginning of the 2017-2018 school year. This is the first year as an all-Spanish Immersion school. The month of October is a great month for our PTA. In the next few weeks we are redoing the playground surface. We have our Fall Festival coming up on October 27 from 6-9 pm so our PTA has been busy working with the community to make this year great! Our membership drive is still thriving and we are so excited to have so many great parents helping this year. Our Shadow Hills PTA is motivated and enthusiastic for the duration of the school year.

CREEKSIDE EARLY LEARNING CENTER PTA is excited about doing great things for the youngest members of the District, the Creekside Cubs. The Back to School PTA BBQ was a huge success. We have many fun things planned for the school year. We are looking forward to a fun filled year supporting our teachers and children.
